Default 224r vs 228r

Needing help deciding between either of the two cams at 114 LSA, .600 lift. My current setup is an 03 RCSB Sierra LQ4 with a few bolt-ons. I'm for sure wanting to go one of these routes and plan on milling the stock 317 heads by .030 while I'm at it. I want to be able to get it out and drive it anytime I like. I do plan on a shift kit, and Stall sometime in the near future, probably somewhere around 3200. I've heard and been told that the 224r would be best just from a few people, but it seems that I'd have better luck out of a 228r with that kind of stall. Any reccomendations welcome. Thanks.

The 224R cam will work on a stock stall. The 228R cam would need a stall converter so the vehicle doesn't try to push through the brakes. The best performer would be the 228R cam and your 3200 stall choice.

It depends on the application, current mods, and intended usage for the vehicle. Feel free to give us a call at 512-863-0900. We would be happy to go over your combination and goals and spec the right cam for your needs.

the difference in the two cams is about 10hp and its all up top. I have had a 224r in my car for about 5 years now. Sure its not the nastiest sounding thing out there but it does get the job done.

I've always had luck with high compression/smallish cam combos for street motors. In my opinion they are the funnest to drive. I would do a 224r in that truck even with the stall. It will deal with the weight better than a 228.

Per TSP's website, "The 228R camshaft is a very popular camshaft for customers wanting a very streetable camshaft that makes approximately 5-7 more horsepower than the 224R camshaft."

I would want the 224R for a truck with a 6.0 for the reasons already listed, 5-7hp isn't much difference between them.

I've got this combination in a RCSB Silverado and have been quite happy with it. 6.0 LQ4 with the 228R and a 3200 stall FTI converter. It's been fine on the street, but really puts a smile on your face when you step down on it.

I like the 224/228 over both of those cams.
