Default Good Flowing 5.3 Cylinder Heads for Boost

Getting ready to build a decent 5.3/80mm turbo Mustang and was curious about what aftermarket cylinder head options there are out there for 5.3's I have a sent of 243's that I could rework, but instead of investing in a set of stock cylinder heads I could purchase a set of better flowing aftermarket pieces.

Good flowing compared to what? What are the goals for the engine?

TFS As-Cast 220s might fit if you do a .040" overbore to 3.820" bore.

Otherwise, the TFS 205s are designed for the 5.3L bore and are fully CNC'd and come with PM guides from TFS.

Either has the thicker deck and rolled valve angle.

But a set of TEA or AI ported 243s would be very good as well with LS9 gaskets.

MMS has a 205 CC Small Bore Head for 5.3 which flow
~300 CFM @ .600" with a good E/I Relationship and
Thicker deck for boost.

Is it based on the TFS casting? Or the original AFR 205?

He's been using TFS a lot lately. I wonder if he just Mamofied the TFS 205?

It's an AFR casting actually....both are obviously good but this project took me a long time and I started with the porters special AFR casting that the older AFR 205 and newer AFR 210 come from

This head only has 1.975 / 1.575 valves however and its a velocity animal with close to 300 CFM through that really small intake valve (meant to work better on the 5.3 liter bore size). Also the exhaust is exceptional as well....240+ CFM through the small exhaust valve.....an E/I ratio of 81%

Boost anyone?

This head would make good power N/A on a 5.3 but be exceptional boosted on the same size engine with the velocity, CFM, and the ratio of intake/exhaust

If anyone is seriously interested shoot me a PM.....I will give you a deal on a set if your going to be featuring the results here and I like the overall game plan and direction of the build!

Catch you guys later

-Tony

Default Exhaust Valve Size

Hi Tony, what would you do to increase Exhaust Flow ?

Years age I had Guy create a SBC "turbo" head with a 1.7" exhaust valve/largest port.

Would this be possible with a LS at 3.82 ?

I LOVE the GEN-IV AL LS-5.3 at 3.86" with wall @.120" average.

243 heads are to this day one of the best heads.chevy made. Expensive and hard to find these days. You could up.compression through milling them Making a smaller dish and possibly a port and valve job. It's not a must though bc they will likely outflow your needs in the end. If you do.research the gen 4 5.3s came stock with 243 heads bc they realized they had an existing product that addea roughly 40-50--hp alone but when paired with the righy cam and Intake and correct sizes turbos that number will just grow bc they work synergistically with other parts Making each one more.effective. you'd be looking at spending well over 2000$ to obtain a pair of.cylinders that would have comparable output and dependability. Unless those 243s are unsalvagable.stick with them. A 5.3 na with hci will never make.more than 450hp at the crank. Then if.you use the rules we all.know are aware that the more hp you can produce na will translate to the more hp you can.obtain from boost. The rule of.thumb is.when running 14.7lbs of boost you intheory have doubled your hp made na. You could optimize your set up by I'dentifyng what the vehicle will be used as. They will identify the direction you. Need to.go when.chowing parts. Pairing your cam heads intake and turbo size together in a way thay will make your vehicle.produce power I'm your.desired rpm.range. say you want a streetcar when your likely to be burning up sets of.tires and want rapid spooling of.turbos and get into boost almost immediately and you.experience immediate torque and you will have gobs of usable power until 6000 or.so.rpms which.as.a.daily or.steet car you.will spend.most time.in low to mid rpm ranges. But if your.build is.solely.used.as a.1/4 mile strip car your.goal now is .max.power output wnd will. Build those big hp.numbers needed to win.races now your build uses the parts thay rolls boost in after 3k and your cam heads and intake are now chosen bc your goal.is.to extract as much usable.hp while doing so.as safely aspossible as an engine can be.when they are being forced to rev well over 7000 rpms consistently and.to be.competitive.you need much hp and that is achieved only at those.rpm ranges thay causes your.engine to sound like it's unlocking an Internal demon
Out access to such high level.parts and the amazing tuning capabilities from.these newer engine management systems has opened the door to things.ae thought impossible in the past. Nowadays everyone has a 1000hp turbo junkyard ls special for less than 2k$..also people are running numbers thought i.possible in the past have been obliterated we have radial dudes in the..mid 3s. Big.tire.no prep. Door cars in the 3s.

Ls BO 53- 243/799 heads came on every Gen IV 5.3 built. Very common and not expensive.
Under boost, head work is not really necessary. See Richard Holdener's videos on the subject.
You talked much above and really said very little....
