Default Planing an LQ4 build

Planning an LQ4 Swap

Planning an LQ4 Build

  • So, I'm looking for some advice. I'm planing an LQ4 Swap into my 64 Chevy II. The plan is a junk yard engine (don't have one yet) and L92 heads (already picked up a set due to a screaming deal). I'm real familiar with sbc's but decided to go LS for the obvious reasons.

The car is going to be a street car/driver that may see a road course or two in the future. I basically want a car that is a kick in the shorts to drive that's capable of whatever I throw at it.

It's my understanding that the L92 heads on an LQ4 give the engine a low compression ratio due to the combustion chamber. Is it better to go with a flat-top piston with valve reliefs, mill the heads, or can a head gasket do the trick? Is it better to get a custom cam spec'd out? Any place or brand preferred?

I'm keeping it fuel injected. Just starting to plan this beast out. Any help, advice, etc. will be greatly appreciated.

Pick up a junkyard lq4. A set of used ls3/l92 rods and pistons. Build you an iron ls3. Should be at 500hp with the l92 heads

I hadn't heard of that yet. Will the LQ4 crank still work? How about compression ratio?

Options for your build

Find a rather pricey lq9. take 317 heads off put l92 heads and l92 intake on. The l92 heads have a bit smaller chamber than the 317s so you would pick up cr a little.

Find an lq4 for less and build it same way. miss out on some cr but still have a solid build

Find an lq4 and put lq9 pistons in it for possibly less than an lq9 and have a new set of pistons and rings to worm with and put l92 heads on it.

We sell the flat tops and top end gasket kits for a VERY budget friendly price.

At what point do the pistons need to have valve reliefs? Should i go with flat tops or pistons with reliefs? And what would be a good target compression ratio?

11-11.5CR is good for premium pump gas, if you want to use the lower octane gasoline, then I would drop it down to 10-11:1.

The requirement for reliefs in the pistons is going to depends mainly on what cam you want to use. Generally speaking, the more overlap designed in the cam, the tighter the piston to valve (PTV) will be. If you have enough in your budget to build the engine with new pistons, you can find some aftermarket pistons with domes and reliefs that can work with the stock rods, so you can run a big cam and still have a more optimal compression ratio without breaking the bank too badly.

That was kinda the plan... it's going into a 64 Chevy II so emissions isn't a concern, regarding the cam. I want a nice lumpy cam, but one that's still streetable. So far, some of these replies have me intrigued. There's many more options than what I was aware of. Is nice being in the presence of gear heads.

So, I'm thinking custom cam & matching springs, new lifters and push rods. What's the opinion on rocker arms? Reuse the crank (polish if necessary) and rods, likely replace the pistons and rod bolts. New timing set, single or dual roller? New oil pump. Are there preferred pumps?

Cam springs pushrods start at 585 here
Hd single row set is $65 or billet set for $90 single row is way to go, this isnt an sbc anymore
Hi flo oil pump is $85 or melling HD high pressure is $130 melling is the preferred pump
Lifters are $95
Stock rockers are fine. we have 2 diff trunion upgrades but they arent necessary on a street build
The stock rod bolts are fine.
Complete rebuild kit with flat top coated skirt with hard anodized face pistons plasma moly std fit rings cam/crank/rod bearings all hd gaskets, head bolts, hi flo oil pump, hd stock style timing set, cam thrust plate oil barbell is $630. substitute the billet timing set and melling 10295 pump and its $750. prices include shipping.

That cam sounds sick! With the setup you listed, what would be a realistic hp number with the L92 heads? Hopefully in a couple months I'll be a player for it... thanks!

Thats actually in the very mild range. made 385 in an m6 fbody with 853 heads ls6 intake speed eng long tubes and offroad y. Thats roughly 440 crank. It could make well over that in a 6.0 or 370 (.030 over) with l92 heads but id recommend a bit larger cam if you want to meet your goals.. Not by much though. Itll sound a bit meaner than that even.
Wouldnt be hard to do though.

If I did the LQ4 with a car intake, what wiring harness would be best?

If you want cable driven throttlebody the 2002 camaro is pretty popular.

I've been finding a bunch of aluminum sheet metal ls3 intakes with 102mm throttle bodies and fuel trails for about $600. Are these a good buy or junk?

They are chinese made. even the holley "sniper" ones. chinese. so make your determination based off that. we sell a few of the holley but they are more high rpm stuff and not really intended for street duty.

Good to know. So, just look for a factory ls3 intake?

Same thing.
Longer runner needed honestly. Like an ls6 for car setup or dorman ls2 etc.
