Default Lm7 5.3 Cam

I have a 71 Chevy Pickup, its a 4x4, has a SM465 4speed with granny low, NP205 transfer case. 4.10 gears. I have a 5.3 out of a Silverado 1500 with low miles. I want to put a bigger cam in that is still very usable. I know that with a manual tranny you can run a little bit bigger cam. I'm not sure what to go with though. My plan is cam, with new valve train, headers full exhaust, and it will be tuned with HP tuners. Need help choosing the correct cam + supporting mods. The truck is for the weekend not a daily driver. Thanks!

The granny gear would be terrible with a cam larger than 220s intake and 220s exhaust really.

We recommend one of our new 5.3l series cams. It is a 215/219 .580/.598 114+2
Can be used with our pac1218 beehives and pushrods. Cam kit runs $585 shipped with springs pushrods and cam.
We have a very wide variety of headers for swaps available, were you looking at a specific brand or style?

Yeah the granny gear rarely gets used...and I have no idea what type of headers are going to fit. What size cam is big for a "stock" 5.3?

Anything above mid 220s intake and 230+ exhaust can drive pretty bad with that gear box due to the aggressive gearing. the torque loss starts around there also. The specs i gave you are on par with what most will have for a torquey truck cam.

I'd say the Jegs 200582, aka sloppy cam or the trick flow http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performan...00582/10002/-1

It's a 228/230 Heard it works wonders on both naturally aspirated and turbo applications.

^^^^ This might be too much cam for the reasons listed by tech@WS6store.^^^^^^
And I agree. Going in a 4x4, even with 4.10 gears, a milder cam would serve the purpose better than something that would compromise bottom-end torque too much.

Alot of truck guys want to run low lift so they can use ls6 springs. Dont ask me why. They arent inexpensive springs they are cheap springs and there is a big difference. Thats the same reason they use the low lifts...that and they actually believe the low lifts wont need a tune. I have litetally been told that by 5 guys. Bring in the lift, use a pac1218 and make more power with no tradeoff.

gm performance hot cam 218/227 and mild .535'' lift. Perfect torque curve and you can run factory springs. Plus sounds cool.

Cant run factory 5.3 springs. you can run the ls6 springs that are in the kit but they arent that great.

And if you are recommending the hot cam, we have a better version that is less $$ for the kit, higher quality, and makes 10 more hp.
