Default Oil pan gasket with stock k-member

What are the easiest ways you guys have found to change the oil pan gasket with the stock k-member. Is it possible to change with the k-member in?

You have to lift the engine a little, and drop the k-member a little, because the trans bell housing is in the way.

Ideally you would want to hoist the engine up with either a hoist or an engine support stand but I have placed a jack under the trans with a block of wood on it and a jack under the balancer pulley with a block of wood to hold it up.

I took the bolts out of my k member and let it hang, as stated above you can lower it, but I don't know if you can just lower it a little on the bolts and get it out, it's a pain regardless.

I've actually cut the sides of the gasket and took a dremel and ground the rivets off the stock gasket and slid the two halves in and rtv where the pieces meet. Its worked for me several times. From what I recall I didn't even unhook the engine mounts.

Yep.

I had to drop my pan a little last time to swap cams (to unhook the oil pump from the pickup). And now I have a leak off the back of the pan, because I didn't RTV it where it meets the rear seal. And there's no way to get to that with the trans bolted on - unless I dropped the pan completely - just dropping 1" to get to the pickup tube is not ideal in any way shape or form. So I would say if you're keeping the trans bolted up, you have to drop the k-member. If you remove the trans, you can drop the pan 1" and slide backward.

Both are a huge pain in the *** for a gasket.

I've got a 4l80 so the bellhousong wasn't a problem. Dropped the kmember a little and fished it out. Took 3-4 hrs working in the garage on jackstands. Wasn't bad at all.
