Default MTI R1 cam in 346 ci??

I am debating to go with the MTI R1 cam in my car..I have TEA S2 5.3 liter head's so the compression is up a tad over stock (no milling).Would the duration of the R1 be too much for my stock shortblock? meaning how is the PVC? and would it make decent power in a 346 or is it too much? Thank's!,

Sounds like you want to make some serious power. Usually MTI puts the R1's in their strokers or big bore packages, and it makes for a reliable, good idling daily driven vehicle. I would talk to MTI about the P/V clearance issue. Some of the other tuners are putting larger cams than the R1 in their head/cam pkgs and are claiming to have good idles. Good luck on your project.

Why not try the new LG cam? That's what I want to try next with my setup. Should be killer.

I ran a very similar cam in my 346, that I got from ARE. It is a 232-236 on a 112, with lift right at .600. I had no problems with PV clearance. The heads were milled minimal, to clean up the heads.

On the dyno, with no dyno tricks, Dennys nitrous driveshaft, TT2 rims with 335's, 12 bolt 3:73, in an auto, the car put down 387/441 HP/TQ, unlocked convertor. It wasn't a bad cam. There was some idle issues, but I'm thinking those were tuning related.

The cam is going into my 393 ARE All Bore. It should have slightly better maners. I say if you want an aggresive cam, this is a good choice. Good luck.

Phillip: Yeah I have thought about the G5X2 cam..but don't you have to do those in lou's shop?If they are available through LG without having to be installed by LG themselves..i'm all over that!

Black Sunshine: Killer TQ number's I am very anxious to try a mondo cam..but keep it traditional split duration and lift.I am also gunna get myself a new re-sleeved block from MTI pretty soon and get it to 4.125 inch..then slap my original rotating assembly back in it (new pistons of course). What's the stock stroke on an LS1 3.635? that would get me 389ci if so..i'd be happy with that!..do it the poor man's way and with a 66cc chamber with diamond flat top's and -3 cc releif's..that would get me 11.2:1 compression..The only thing is,they want 2g's for the new block oh well guess i'd better start saving hehe. If the new LG cam is available through mail order..it's mine!..if not I will give the R1 a shot. thank's guy's,

Just had a word with MTI..They said the R1 will fit without any problem's..just produce no torque and a really crappy idle..but ton's of top end power..with =MPH hehehe I am gunna swap out my Art carr converter for a yank pt4400 to deal with the torque issue and an LS6 intake to help a little more. I hope there is something I can do to help the idle out..my car idle's like crap as it is..but hopefully Tim @ c&s performance can help out with some idle tweaking...It will be about a month before I do it,because I need a new converter and money for tuning also..but I am excited about it and want to see how it does. Later!

Carter, the stock stroke is 3.62. I'm doing mine the poor mans way, with the ARE all bore, 4.100, and with the stock crank offset ground to 3.72 = 393.

If you are staying NA, then that cam with the Yank 4400 will work great. If the weight is right, you should be 10 sec NA no problem. Good luck.

I sat down and figured out what cam would get me
to my goals. It turned out that the MTI R1 cam
was almost exactly the spec that I came to.

5.7L in my drag race prep'ed 99 Camaro with the R1:

9.81 @ 134mph
