Default Is it worth it to port my set of 243s

Hey everyone, I plan on building a street/strip camaro with the stock ls1. Originally I was just going to do a budget n/a motor but now I'm itching to put some nitrous through it, probably 150-200 wet shot. Now my question is as stated in the title, I have a set of 243s in the machine shop getting refreshed now and a valve job/bowl work with dyno results of a 25hp gain to the crank with a set of stock 853 heads. I'm curious about the benefits of porting them would be. A basic rundown of the other parts on the motor are going to be stock bottom end with arp rod bolts, a comp cam .604/.609 .238/.240, ported fast 92, slp headers with 3 inch true duals, and basically all the other supporting mods for a decent nitrous build. Just wondering what the power differences would be with the H/C/I with and without the porting.

Just porting alone would probably get you another 30 or so hp.

Honestly if the person porting the heads knows what they are doing then you'll always have a net gain with porting, How much depends to many factors to put an exact number on it. With your setup having everything before and after the heads built for better breathing it would be a shame not to get the heads worked if it's in the budget.

Also want to add I know some guys at the machine shop so I'd get the cnc work done a little cheaper but still probably in the $350+ area

It would most likely be a cnc job I'm just concerned about if the dollar to hp would be worth it.

Same difference more or less. In general whatever you gain n/a is about what you will gain on the nitrous as well

Regarding $ to hp.

If the $350 porting only gained 10 hp that's well worth it in my opinion. $35 per hp is a good deal. I think proper porting with a good valve job will gain 25hp to 30 hp.

I would jump on it at that price lol People spend $500-$1000 on news intakes or cam changes to gain 10-30hp and CNC porting should put you well over that.

You said you're already getting bowl work and a valve job and you got 25 hp from that? Is that what you meant?

No the shop has a carbed ls1 with smaller cam than what I plan on doing with stock heads and they dynoed the set up with no valve job and it made 455 then they did the valve job and it made 480.. the heads already have the valve job and are still in the shop. I just stated that to give more information regarding the hp gains with porting over that set up.

I see, just didn't know if it was like other bolt ons where you get more out of a mod with other things rather than just the single mod.

Are you saying that the cnc work should yield 10-30+ on top of the valve job/bowl work or with them combined?

That's why I asked the question I asked. A very big part of the gains in the head work is the bowl work and valve job.

I would expect roughly 30 (25-35) over stock heads, so if you're already getting 25, there isn't much left there to gain, but there is some. 10-15 ish, so depends on how much you want to spend to get there. Of course these numbers could go a little higher or lower, it's hard to accurately guess at it.

Gotcha, I'm going to find out about pricing once they get the cnc machine in a few weeks and if i can get lucky and have them done for like 300 or less because im friends with 2 of the guys that work there i might as well get it done just because hp to dollar wouldn't be too bad at that price. I just can't really justify $500 on about 10hp

And if they're doing testing they can probably give you a more accurate hp number too.

I'm really curious what they would get from the port work.

You said they already did the valve job, but you didn't say if they did the bowl work, i'd definitely get the bowl work done, the port work will be up to you and $$$ per hp.

**** I need friends like that.

I'd go pull apart the motor on my 2014 truck if I could get bowl work and valve job for $100

Ya I'm lucky as hell, this whole project is going to be way better and cheaper than if I didn't have the connections
