LQ4 or LQ9
Was thinking of building one to put in my 05 Silverado. Nothing crazy1 Something to play with on the street, have a little lope to it and smoke the tires at will, occasionally!! LOL! Use to have an old school 350 built with a solid lifter cam in a S-10 that I played with
LQ9 is the better motor. Has flat-top pistons rather than the dished in the LQ4. Largely the same otherwise. Look for one with the floating pins and better rods. 05-up I believe, but 06 for sure. Not hard to find one out of some Escalade or Yukon Denali. They also tend to be in better shape; LQ4 was used in 2500s and such, since they tend to be for work, plow, lawn care svc, etc., which get used a whole lot harder.
Pay as much attention to the converter, transmission, and drive train as the engine.

If your BUILDING it then it doesnt matter witch one you chose because you will be replacing the pistons anyways.
But like said before 04+ will have floating pin pistons with better rods if you plan on reusing the stock stuff. but for a Mild NA setup any year with either rod is perfectly fine.

If your staying N/A, any 6.0. Get a LQ4 and swap the heads for 243/799's with a cam and call it good. You can have 450rwhp with a nice N/A cam @ 10.5:1 ish. Stick the GTP 36/42# injectors in it to stay on budget.
This is my LQ4, it's from a 2001 2500 series Pick Up. Not too sure of the HP now. Stock internals other than a cam (MS4) and new lifters, the heads are #317's with PAC .660 springs. My 3080# car runs the 1/4 in 10.98 @ 121 (on a good day) but 11.0's every other day. 6.97 to 7.02 in the 1/8 @ 98/97
