no ls1tech pics at work :/ Felpro's website references right hand vs. left hand. You sure you have the gasket on the correct side of the motor and facing the right way? Is it possible the year matters?

read post 200 lololololol. You can’t even put them on the wrong side because no holes line up and you can’t put upside down because the holes don’t line up. They don’t have a year listed on their application chart. Just 5.3 engines listed.

YES, be concerned about coolant passage through head gasket. I'd recommend, talk to Felpro so they understand your issue and can adjust application guide. Open up hole to not impede coolant flow through gasket/head.

I'd scrutinize the supporting parts on that valve tip failure to understand root cause. Valve spring weak? Shimmed differently? Rocker geometry?

I dont think so. I can check my other block at home but being the holes lined up on that block (gto ls1) with the ls9 gaskets....I doubt there is a difference. I definitely checked and double checked. Im gonna call fel pro and see what they say.

Heres the thing. I have a pushrod checker. I checked the previous cam but not the current one. The current one hasnt been in that long so That was probably there before the latest cam swap. These heads are used with an unknown history. I hate to say it but I never checked before. I'm replacing everything and I'll check the pushrod length. I'm gonna run it as is and order the correct pushrods if i need to make a change.

I just talked to fel pro. He said they may have been restricting the flow right there because it’s close to the water pump. I honestly wasn’t happy with that answer so I explained to him that the other gaskets I have that I stuck on there, factory from gm, do not block the hole. So I definitely feel like that’s not the case. He’s going to pull prints on the factory gaskets and compare hole locations to determine if it’s an error. My course of action at this point is to open the hole a little to allow water to flow. I’m just wondering if it would help to open up all the other smaller holes? Especially at the rear cylinders. Or maybe I’d open a can of worms I dont want.

Talked to Felpro again. All the gaskets like this, in the prints (what they go off of to make them I guess) they are all the same. HOWEVER, any other 5.3 ls gasket has the hole moved over .160 in the direction it needs to be moved, and actually being in the correct spot. He’s going to let his project man at know about this and get back to on what I should do. at this point, I’m probably going to have to punch the hole in the correct spot and roll with it unless they overnight me a set of gaskets. I’m anxious to see how fel pro takes care of their customers. I’m gonna post a thread on this giving people a heads up on this.

Good to know....kind of messed up that Felpro has it like that. Sounds like a design issue.

I personally wouldnt be altering the head gaskets to work on such a nice motor.

See if you can return them and just get some not from Felpro imo. The peace of mind would be worth it to me but I worry about small stuff.

Went to a buddies shop this evening to pick up my head. While I was there, I showed him the pic and he had some fel pro gaskets there. The holes were in the same spot as mine. However, cometic and ls9’s he had were moved over and do not block the coolant jacket in the block. Check it. Pay special attention to how the hole is offset to the other side of the head bolt dowel hole.

I agree but I also am at a point where I have no choice. I’m sure if I slot the hole over a little, I don’t see it being a problem. It’s not on the sealing surface .

So just hung up with fel pro. As far as we know right now, my gaskets are definitely stamped wrong. They are pulling all the gaskets in the warehouse to check and see how many were done like this. I guess is all of them since the design prints have the hole in the wrong spot. Now I’m in a bind for gaskets and I’m not sure what my next move is. He said he doesn’t think they can make me a set of gaskets and get them to me by the weekend.
