Glad you found the problem. The devil is always in the details. Not a slam but hopefully some insight - Like building transmissions, to do it effectively, you have to know what each piece does, how it suppose to operate, how they interact/work with the other components, and are they all operating as expected. When we miss a step, that's the one that typically comes back to bite ya. Maybe it was Confucius who once said - when you know you know you're good to go... you're good to go!

Hope you get everything sorted out and can crank it up with confidence.

I picked up king rod bearings and acl main bearings and a 10295 melling pump for $159 including tax. $145 before tax. I don’t know how he can sell main and rod bearings for $30. The king rod bearings look better (visually) than the clevite. I’m not so sure how much of a fan I am with clevite after the bad bearing I got and them not even caring. The acl bearings look every bit as good as the factory bearings too.

I watched a melling video on how to easily prime the engine without buying any special tools. I’m gonna do that right before putting it in the car. I gotta work all day Saturday but I should be able to feet it all cleaned up and back together on Sunday. Maybe drop it in the car if I don’t fart around too much. O crap. I just remembered. Can’t put it in Sunday. I think I’m switching head gaskets. Ima research a little before. I’m looking at a mahle mls gasket for 5.3 bore.

We may have some 54441 in stock. Those are for 4.8 5.3l but wont work with any 243/799/317/853 head. Gasket bore too small for chamber. Only work with 862 and 706 with smaller stock valve.

I have 243’s so I’d need the 54442

but I’ve only read bad things about mahle head gaskets.

The gaskets we have are nearly exactly the same.

Mahle and victor reinz used to be the same company. 2 years ago they split ways. Since then both have suffered.

Not to make them sound bad but we got a full shipment of their 54442 in and they were 54441 mispackaged. It was a total nightmare.
We use them still for quite a few gaskets but always have to measure now to make sure. Its an extra step that basically costs us money and time that shouldnt be.

its over 100lbs and weight in the passenger seat is much much different that putting weight over the front wheels, down low. My buddy weighed an aluminum block and an iron block and he got 100lbs difference. If you do a search on here for “weights of ls blocks” you’ll see the same thing I’m telling you. And I know you like to argue, so if you decide you want argue about it, I have an iron 5.3 in my possession and I can weigh it and the aluminum block at the same time. Lol.

Ive weighed them. I have them as well. Also an ls2 and iron 6.0

The bottom line is weight difference on a gto lets say is a moot point for what you gain but also just moot in general. The only reason it would matter is in competitive road course. Otherwise a non issue.

Aight brochachoes. I got it all cleaned up. I went through several cans of brake parts cleaner. Used my galley brushes and scrubbed it clean. Then did it a couple more times. Blowing it out with compressed air each time. She clean for sure.

Look at these scuffed bearings

i don’t like how these lifters look. They are scratched up and I guess they have put their time in. Time to retire them. I have a set of hylift Johnson’s coming for Thursday. I also ordered another set of ls9 head gaskets. I didn’t wanna chance reusing them. I don’t want to chance anything this time so if it’s in question it gets corrected or replaced. Should have been like that the first go round. Had I just put a new pump in, no problem.

here’s the lifters.

man side by side, these acl bearings look much nicer than the clevite. The coating looks more uniform. They just look nicer visually.

brought my crank over to my buddy. He polished it back out for me and said he evened out the clearances on the journals. I checked everything and clearances came in right where we wanted. Went ahead and installed the crank in the block, checked my thrust clearance and called it a night.

my goal is the have the motor finished by Saturday and drop it in Saturday night or Sunday and see how far I get. If I work efficiently I can get it running before Sunday is over.

That sucker is clean for sure and man sucks about the bearings and lifters but cheap fixes. I have to agree with you on the bearings not looking as good quality... glad it will be running again soon.

Those are eaton lifters anyway. Not worth the money you paid for them period.
The oil hole in line with the lifter flat and basically acting as a drain hole is not good.

you talking about the lifters I posted a pic of? I didn’t pay anything for them. That’s the factory lifters that came in the car. So those are trash too?

They are trash. You can buy them new also but there is a very real reason why gm stopped using them. The only thing they ever had going for them is the live axle. Everything else about them is less than sub par.

No one in the aftermarket even uses their bodies. On delphi lifter, morel and 1 other company i believe use the delphi body for their entry level drop in style with modifications of course.

If you buy new ones make sure they dont look like that.

Make sure lifters are tight in lifter tray, no rotation.

I had bought new trays. They are tight. But I just wonder if they are running straight. They are factory gm trays that cam in gm bags.

I got two pistons installed last night. Got the crank torqued. Got a text today that my lifters are in. I’ll go by engine parts warehouse tomorrow at lunch and pick them up. Hopefully my head gaskets make it tomorrow and I’ll stop by my buddies house and pick them up on the way home tomorrow. He orders stuff in bulk from btr and I had him add my gaskets in his order to save me a few bucks.

im actually having fun building this thing again. Is that weird? The stress part is over and I feel better about things this time. I should have just put lifters in and a new oil pump the first time. At least it gave me practice pulling the engine. Lol. I’m just hoping this thing is faster than the 5.7 it replaces. I sure hope so since I was limiting boost to 11-12 max I. Third gear. I’ll be able to turn this up a good bit higher once I put a return fuel system, bigger injectors and dual fuel pumps. I shoukd be able to run it at 14-15lbs as it is.

Got almost as much done as I planned. Bottom end is assembled. Cam, timing chain, oil pump and windage tray installed. Gotta put oil pan and covers on. Then the rest of the valvetrain and heads. Should be done with it Friday night. I’ll drop it in Saturday and see if I can get it running.
