yes it is. My initial/ hopeful cost was around $5-$7k. But realistically I’m thinking around $11-$13k. At least more in the ball park. But you never know. Maybe I’ll get lucky for once.

see post #13 (other good info there too), I laid out what I did with mine to a total of about $7k, now your not going to get a new engine for that but you can do a very good used engine and keep it in that price range.

To me I wouldn't waste time, money, or effort on that block. I would look for a pullout and enjoy it at the stock power with maybe just an exhaust and cam as an upgrade. BTW, this spring I sold a 55k mile LS1 and T56 for $2,500. No bell housing and no accessories or computer but you have all that.

Yes you should keep the block!!!
the problem is i would like to keep the block. With it being a 30th anniversary I want to keep the numbers matching if at all possible. But if I can’t then I can’t.[/QUOTE
Yes you should keep the block!!! Put it in the back shed for the next 20 years!!!
Now get a new or used LS1 engine or maybe think about an LS3 no replacement for displacement!!!!
Quit thinking a number matching POS 30th anniversary Tran Am will be worth anything -
Now maybe a 35th anniversary!!! Nah another POS - Build it drive it enjoy!!!
Buy on of these:

The only people who would ever think a 30th anniversary TA's are junk for some strange reason are Camaro owners.....
But now that you have possession of the car, I feel pretty confident that you will be enjoying it once its up and going with the bugs worked out of it. (from sitting)
The original engine could be of some value POSSIBLY to an EXTREME collector, but I dont think say a LS2 or LS3 in it would make it worth any less to 99% of people.
Also $8000 for a 5.7 long block is insane....

After sitting for 20 years the engine may be the least of his problems!!
My 1999 Formula Firebird was a total PIA - will the headlight motors work today!! Damm driver window motor OUT!!!
My 2001 Camaro -no headlight motors and no window motors what a treat!!! And a rare color WOW has 140,000 thousand miles I enjoy driving it.

Need some opinions/ ideas/ suggestions on getting my LS1 going
i have a 99 30th anniversary Trans am
stock LS1. Going in to have the engine rebuilt due to problems from long ago. What I’m wanting to do is keep the car stock looking as stock as possible to keep the anniversary collectible part of the car. But while having the engine taken out of the car and rebuilt I’m wanting to get more pony’s.(Don’t we all). Instead of just putting everything back 100% stock I figured why not upgrade some things that won’t be noticeable when looking at it.
My goal would be in the 400 + range (450 🤞🏼
been doing some research but you guys are the ones who know this stuff so go straight to the source.
would new pistons, cam, and maybe LS6 heads be a good starting place? I’ looking for something that can be driven daily if needed and will be a reliable running car
thanks for any help
if you have anymore questions don’t hesitate.

With new pistons I'd try for around 11:1 compression

400hp goal should be easy for you. I had a 98 i mildly ported some 862 truck heads that flow benched to what ls6 heads do. Although i had around .020 milled so the compression was little more.. stock bottom end.. and comp cam version of gm's hot cam. I use a converter from the trailblazer (approximately 2400-2800) i believe and ls6 intake plus typical bolt on and made 425 whp. Torque was around 390 DD was not an issue also seen 25mpg on the interstate.. at 80mph.

400 crank HP will be easy with an LS1 and some upgrades. So are you talking 400 crank or 400 WPH ??
What RPM ?? Details do make a difference.

A 30th anniversary in mint condition is close to 30K value according to Haggerty. Valuations are climbing and if it's low mile and pristine, original will be worth more money.
thank you sir. I saw that myself made me glad I hung on to it and will continue too.
going to meet shop owner here in OKC next Monday about getting the Trans Am up and running. If it’s what I’m looking for then hopefully we will have it in the shop in the next 2-3 weeks. I’ll make sure and keep updated. I’m still looking at what to do with it.
im thinking if 400hp is seeming pretty easy I would really be happy with 450 to the wheel. That set up would be ideal.

Thanks for updating your information best of luck on your build.
Need to clarify this statement very confusing:
