Default Streetable z28 - finally

So I bought my 98 z28 in 2005. Literally have done nothing to it since then(I was in the military and overseas a lot and now I have four kids). I have an SLP cold air intake and a stainless exhaust. It’s an automatic. I’m looking for some advice on where to begin to start getting some increased power out of the ls1. I would be looking around 400rwhp at most currently. Just something to tool around in on the weekends. I’m not a novice mechanic, but I’m definitely lacking in engine intervals. I’d like to do as much myself to learn as much as possible. I’m probably a bolt on candidate mostly as super chargers are out of my comfortable price range currently.

Being an Auto the first mod you should do is a torque converter. Something in the 3600rpm range is perfect. Then i would look into a cam and maybe some mildly ported heads. I would get a good plan together first so you only have to get it tuned once.

Small cam, 225 heads and headers should get you there, 3600 converter.

I would get a converter and a transmission cooler first and maybe headers and a mail order tune. I recommend a yank ss3600. See how you like the car after that and if you still want more power, then get into the engine.

Head wise, even a stock set of 243/799 heads would help it, along with an LS6 intake (OEM or Dorman) .
Put a 212/218, .600/.600 112LSA cam in it and it will come alive. Tune it, of course.

Another thing is you need to come up with a realistic budget and that will help lead you in the direction on modding your car

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I will make a list and see what kind of budget I’m looking at. First things first, torque converter I guess. Better read how to install one.

Idk if there are any write ups about installing a torque converter but it requires removing the trans. One of the best mods you can do. I would also do a trans cooler at that time

Is there a significant difference between OEM and Dorman? Not many used ones I can find that aren’t close to buying brand new.

Not really. I think the Dorman is a direct copy of the OEM LS6 manifold.

Guess it’s time to pony up and start accumulating parts. The LS6 intake swap is slightly more complicated than I anticipated as a one for one swap. Might have a local shop do the torque converter depending on the labor costs.

Is there any danger to the stock rear end with a 3600 stall? I’m not going to be drag racing.

Honestly the 10 bolt is a time bomb so it could last but I could also blow up tomorrow. Hard to say. I ran my ten bolt hard at the track as a bolt on car. I got lucky mine didn’t blow before I changed it to a Dana 60. Just remember you will need a trans tune when you get a converter

10 bolt should live a long time behind a auto.
I have many many 1.5x 60's on mine

10 bolt is dog water. I have an auto and broke mine the same day I first put drag radials on the car.
