Default ARP head bolts...How far have you gone wit them?

Hello fellas....how much boost have you ran with ARP head bolts. Not a blast or three...consistent. I recently upgraded my turbo and changed to a 4 port solenoid so I've added moar bewst....I hit 24 the other night and it concerns me....5.3, 243 heads, ls9 gaskets....wondering if I need to make plans on swapping the bolt out for studs....

I've been 30+ PSI on stock head bolts. I wouldn't be concerned about the ARP ones.

The issue with bolts usually falls to the fact that they are bolts, not in the strength of the bolts themselves.

that’s good to hear, how often did you do that? My buddy has a 5.3 in his Silverado and he turned it up to 30 and it blew the head gasket in less than a week. Holley terminator computer, he’s very well versed in tuning, e85. He had arp bolts. But he used fel pro gaskets. Instead of ls9.

Stock TTY at 16 psi, an ARP has to be good for twice that right? 🤣

what? I’d hope you would screw the head bolts in all the way. What does that have to do with my question?

I dunno about that!
maybe my buddy just had a head gasket blow because he used fel pro and copper coated them. I don’t believe in copper coated a new head gasket not designed for copper coat.

I'm not even using MLS gaskets. If we stick to power level where do you think you are? I'm north of 700whp and I would imagine making more torque with a 5.7 at 10.5:1.

what kind of boost are you running? e85 or pump?
i'm on pump 93, 20+psi, 5gph nozzle pre turbo (think i'm going up to 7gph)
I'm sure its at 700 or more.
I logged it last night, at 20psi, 5600 rpm and up it was pulling 1-2 degrees of timing. not good. I took some timing back out...

Based on logs of fuel pressure rising with boost I'm seeing 16 psi, but its not apples to apples against a lower compression 5.3. I've got 1-1.5 points more compression and cubes. I'm being conservative on power give that I was in the 400-420whp range NA and added 16 psi of boost. I'm on 93 plus windshield washer fluid, but I run a 10gph nozzle. Bumping your nozzle size to an M10 would likely cure youre knock. What's your spark table look like?

ill post the table in a couple hours. Computer is in my truck.

what heads do you have? I have ported 243’s with 2.02/1.6 ferrea valves that flow over 300 intake with really good low and mid lift. Exhaust is 226cfm. Both at .600. Cam is 222/233. Intake is ported dorman ls2. It’s probably make 450hp at the flywheel. At least 425 I’d imagine. 850-900 flywheel at 20-22psi. I’m figuring on the low side I’m sure because my injector duty cycle says it should be higher. I’ll have a dragy here soon and now that I have tires on the car, I can find out about what it runs.

I know this is a little cheesy, but gives me a ballpark idea. I just found a 5.3 Dyno video. Cam was close. 243 heads. 5.3. Didn’t say the heads were ported and not sure of intake. Looked like a stock ls1 or ls6 intake and a spray of meth on pump gas with a little 110 mixed in. 772rwhp 808tq. 21psi boost. So I guess maybe I might be in that ball park. I did upgrade the exhaust housing also which freed up some power. So considering my heads might be a little better, my intake is probably better and my turbo housing is bigger….in my mind I feel like I should make at least that. If my tune is spot on.

I'm on stock 243's. Curious to see your dragy stuff. Your numbers seem in the ballpark given your pressure ratio and NA estimate. I'm guessing I am being conservative as well given that I'm north of 400WHP NA, it's just hard for me to fathom that a cast 5.7 is making that type of steam. Everyone and their brother runs 4.8's/5.3's to 1 million hp, but nobody I see runs AL cast 5.7 and having them live, especially on pump.

Not a Fan of ARP, but kind of stuck with them for serious builds. No other manufacturers out there to easily buy from.
but here's one of the 2 head bolts that broke before I even got to 65 ft-lbs. 2 bolts from 2 different sets and different holes on the block. This was a fiasco dealing with ARP. I even have a few other bolts that are stretched from each set as I was torqueing them down.

I’ve never had an issue with arp. I’ve run their stuff all my life. I consider their products to be top notch. Maybe a little over priced, but high quality. I guess it’s possible you could have received a bad batch, that happens. Even in the gun world where sig and Glock are high regarded, problems still exist.
what torque wrench were you using?

by the way, I see aluminum or some metal in the threads. My first thought is the threads weren’t cleaned and the bolt got seized. Not trying to throw judgment, but having metal in the threads like that is more likely installer error. I’m pretty sure you dont want to hear that, but only you know deep down if it was or wasn’t.

I'm guessing at 20 psi you're well past 1.2g/cyl so the top row just becomes the timing curve? We have similar timing actually. Probably because ofy higher compression and your higher boost.

yea I have the tune scaled (I need to scale more now) and it maxes 1.2g/cyl around 14-15psi

Actually, pretty close. For sure 29.

Agree M5 is tiny. For 700hp on pump I run a M15 or larger, can get that timing off the 11* floor back up to 13-15. Some cars I do direct port and run a 3 in each cylinder, works well and spits lots of fire at that point
