BTR GEN III & IV TRUCK CAM - STAGE 3 - V2 - BTR31824100 (218/224 .553/.553 110+0)

this is the cam that's in my truck, mind you I do spray this truck with up to 200 shot of nitrous. I usually keep it at 150 tho. Any suggestions on a different cam if I do need to replace it or should I keep the same cam

I dont see any noticeable damage anywhere, only thing i do notice is that the lifters are very loose in the trays. They fall right out of the trays

The important thing is looking down in the engine and seeing if you have a damaged cam lobe,
I have also seen an engine "chirp" when one of the cam bearings walked out..

A inexpensive bore scope is your friend on this one..
Can you see the cam looking down the lifter bores?

The sound was coming from the passenger head, that's what's crazy about it

Sounds kind of crazy but I actually think it's the valves and springs. There's alot of build up on that side and there's no signs of any real damage

yes I removed both heads, the lifter trays are very loose on both sides but the drivers head is very clean and fresh looking where as the passenger head has alot of like black carbon build up around the valves and the springs

the springs have black carbon looking build up on them where as the drivers side is very clean.
also the guy i got the motor from supposedly port, polished and milled the heads and I'm no machinist but i do not see any signs of any port work so i think im going to bring the heads to a machine shop and have them check them and confirm the port work or do the port work if its not done and also from my understanding milling is a must on 243 heads on a 5.3 so I'll get that looked at too

All LS engines will have this “clean side and dirty side” head under the valve covers. It’s from the way the PCV pulls clean air through the engine. First time I saw this, I thought the engine in front of me had a new head on one side.

oh wow, I don't know what's going in. I can't find any damage anywhere. Besides the loose trays

The trays should hold the lifters so snugly, that the lifters won’t fall out of them when removed, even in a 150k mile engine. You should try and find a new set of GM lifter trays. Don’t settle for aftermarket trays, as they aren’t made from the same product, and will wear quickly. The loose trays will allow the lifters to turn (instead of running exactly square) a tad on the cam lobe. This will cause lobe and wheel scarring at a minimum from the heat that is produced, from not staying square on the lobe. Looks to me from your pics, that this is your exact issue.

hopefully so, I ordered the trays and lifters from summit. I figured they would sell me quality parts.
when I picked up the trays none of the lifters came out. I had to use a magnet to remove them from the block.
