I use to work for Rick. I did lots of tig welding for him. Stand up guy thats very smart.
I didn’t know you could tig J. That’s a very sought after, high paying occupation. I know guys that tig weld Ti and get $500 an hour.
I’ve never met Rick, but I’ve seen heads he’s custom made from billet.
Local guy did my Ti Exhaust on my C5Z06, I wanted the 1.5" bypass welded in. I bought the tube and paid him for the time when he gave me the price. My welders at work can do the same we have the equipment for it and have done some. Just hard to sneak in the home projects on this scale..
Quality welds tho, stacked. I bolted them back up and been on the car since 2018. Added to the sound well. Posting pics because he did good.
Absolutely gorgeous work. A true artist. I can mig with the best of them. I own a tig that I’ve never turned on. That’s on my list for the spring.
Yup guy did good and I paid him for the time. I've done some Tig on aluminum and it's definitely a whole different thing than your normal Mig. One of my guys is sharp with it, he's done it a long time.
I like them bypasses on the car, they went in before I did my TSP Stainless Headers. Nice sound.
So trickflow is a no go now. Close friend had troubles with Frankenstein and afr could be China castings these days. Who the hell can we trust for aftermarket heads these days?
That Tig work is great I can barely use a MIG on steel lol. Yeah I feel like porting a set of 243s for my application is the way to go. But you lose the oversized valves etc if I can get rid of these I’ll probably just throw some stock 243s maybe see what the shop could do not sure. Are the prc 237 junk?. I bought these fully assembled to avoid having to pay machine shop for new seats valves etc

AFR uses Buddy Bar Casting for their heads since Edelbrock moved the foundry and all of that mess.. Their cheaper Enforcer lines use the china casting. FED uses china casting for their Monster heads last I knew, not sure where the F series heads are done.
I’m curious of the other guy that posted in this thread what his issues were with trickflow. Ther a no recourse at this point with them blaming me. I told the guy I have days and days of data logs I would have seen if something was way out of whack or burning up. Let’s say I cleaned the heads up perfectly. Am I on the wrong track thinking it’s a seat issue that they sunk? Because I did some reading and if that exhaust valve was sticking open obviously would burn them up no?
I told the guy too it suck’s being limited to the roller rockers he said I could grind down a tab on the stock rocker mount. But the holes wouldn’t line up. Regardless they recommended the rollers because of the guides. I think btr puts the metal guides in these heads. And it’s crazy to me where they machined where the rockers sit, I could literally take burns of aluminum off with my fingertip. Can’t tell me that’s my fault too lol.

Trick Flow's customer service sounds awful. I've heard similar stories about their QC being spotty. For that kind of money, you expect better. Have you looked into AFR or Edelbrock heads?
Yeah the afr look good, I hear people like the prc heads from tsp there like 1800 for the pair and can use a stock rocker setup I believe. In regards to the QC at TFS he told me it’s checked ten times before they’re sent out lol. I would like to get the other motor back together. I messed up ordering pistons so the compression is very low like 9:58:1 I should have went little higher.
The valves burning up would be from them not seating properly (would have been running pretty rough)or too long of a pushrod holding it open slightly.(possibly only in the upper RPM’s as oil pressure increased) I do know all the pushrod lengths shouldn’t be exactly the same nobody is that perfect during the machining process.
Anything is possible though could have been a bad set of heads from TFS could have been an old school engine guy trying to set up valvetrain in a LS like a small block.
Did Trickflow give you a price for repairs? I’d imagine that price subtracted from the cost of a new set minus a couple hundred would be the value of the heads.
Yeah they said $1400 which is more than one head lol but he would talk to his boss to see if could get it lower but I’d have to send logs in pictures it wasn’t boosted etc etc I just said ship them back. The rockers all met good because I did ask the engine builder all of this before sending them out. But who knows with that either lol.
This would be a very wise choice for what your doing with this. Send them to Hooper's Heads or WCCH to run their program through if you're really wanting to get the most and don't look back. As long as you can find a good set of cores for a reasonable price I just can't see adding an aftermarket set of cylinder heads vs a good set of ported 243's on a mild setup. Cathedral aftermarket choices would be a set of Tony's or Brodix BR1's if you are going to spend the monies.

I swear I saw a video by Eric weingartner where he said AFR gets some of their castings from China even their higher end models but you will never know if the ones you have came from a foundry in China or the USA.

he did, and I had a set of 227 comp port sbc heads that were china castings.

I could be wrong, but I think all their heads are cast in China. But the machine and assembly is done here. Also they use good quality hardware
these look pretty nice. Probably sell rockers which are brand new and see what I can get for these heads. Unless the local guy thinks it’s worth rebuilding but he kind of already said trick flow is garbage lol. I wouldn’t mind if trick flow was like hey **** happened we do t know $500 maybe but to charge my over the price of one head is insane.
