Not necessarily. The valves are stainless steel, which typically has a higher annealing temperature than ductile iron (around 1900* F). The material properties are quite different than ductile iron, allowing the valves to be more load and wear resistant at elevated temperatures compared to ductile iron. But, there are limits and this issue is why inconel is usually recommended for higher boost applications.

Exhaust valves have a thicker margin and head cross section and smaller diameter, making them less likely to tulip than intake valves. We did not observe any signs of tuliping on Josh's valves. His valve lengths still measured very close to spec.

Okay so since the seats are ductile iron they're more susceptible to higher than normal temperatures and those higher temps and the valves constant closing led to the seats becoming deformed or lets say sink down further into the head.

The timing would have to be retarded a crazy amount to raise the EGT that high on an NA motor, correct? I doubt a professional tuner would do that on an NA combo even if being crazy conservative thinking they were being safe with a start-up tune they wouldn't retard the timing enough to do that. It's possible the engine wasn't actually getting the spark timing that the tuning software thought it was commanding.

I want to thank the OP and Trickflow for both starting this thread and chiming in as maybe we can all learn something from this. I especially want to thank the OP for staying as levelheaded during this as possible and actually trying to investigate using the suggestions members here have suggested.

Happy New Years folks... Cheers :-)

Cam Was degreed at machine shop and the timing wasn’t retarted in the tune as the specs of the cam didn’t really call for it. Mainly your Braf idle speed etc etc all of the main startup aspects. Could be the spark was commanded and not getting there but not for several hours. I CC

This is a valid reason a timing pointer can come in handy if you've got a aftermarket balancer that's keyed or pinned You can make sure what the ecu says it's getting can be confirmed.
