Smile LS1 Gasket/Seal Kit

Hey everyone,

I知 planning a bit of a freshen-up on my LS1 soon. While the engine is out, I値l be replacing the oil pump, timing chain, cam, and doing a full valve train upgrade.

Since everything will already be apart, I知 looking at getting a gasket/seal kit to tidy up and reseal the engine while I知 there. I致e come across kits from Proflow, Permaseal, MACE, etc., but I知 interested to hear what others have used and had good results with.

Just wondering what gasket kits people recommend, and if there are any other things worth replacing or upgrading while doing this work.

Thanks in advance!

note: I'm also Australia based if that plays a role in any guidance

I use BTR gaskets here, and have had good luck with them.

Cometic sells top and bottom gasket kits. Takes all the guess work out of whats needed! They have multiple kits with different head gasket options.

This is a little like asking "what oil should I use?" A million people will tell you all about "I only use this" or "I've got that and don't have problems" or whatever. Mostly fanboy crap and other drivel.

For a typical street-driven (non racing) "refresh", any quality set will do fine. It's just not the sort of thing that really matters. Besides GM themselves, there are FelPro, Mahle, Victor Reinz, etc., to name ones we can get here in the States, that are equivalent to OEM (or ARE OEM, just, GM re-packages them in their own box). There are no doubt others available elsewhere as well; for example any mfr making gaskets of OEM quality for European or Japanese cars would likely work just as well. I don't know any of the brands you listed but if they're the sort of thing people buy at the corner parts store and get good results with I wouldn't hesitate to use them.

As far as other things, I'd suggest new knock sensors and their harness.

Not sure what parts stores are in the "Land down under" but here in the states I just go to the local NAPA or Oreily's for gaskets.
Just make sure you have the o-rings seated properly.
Also a bit of RTV where the oil pan meets the front cover.
For centering the front cover on the crank I took a junk crank pulley and honed out the inside just a bit with a brake hone so the junk pulley will just slide over the crank.
With the front cover along with the new seal installed it centers the front cover on the crank.

Where do y'all buy auto parts in Australia? What kind of parts stores do y'all have down there? Do y'all have independent/ aftermarket parts stores down there?*

It may be a tad different for me as my whole family is in the auto trade in some way or another, so we have access to discounted dealership parts, as well as our usual independent parts retailers. The issue for us now though, is that Holden is no longer caring for all the older LS stuff, as nowadays their push is to upsell on family SUV's and work trucks.

But to name a few, we have things like Repco, Supercheap Auto, Autobarn, and Bursons as our big 4 walk in shops
