Default Valve smacked piston pictures....advice?

ISKY295D broke on S2 heads, 12K on the heads and forged motor. -2cc valve reliefs in Diamond pistons ( stock rods with ARP bolts ).

Valve dropped and is bent, pushrod has a 40 degree angle in it.

Below are pics where the valve smacked the piston. Sorry if the pics are bad.

What to do? Pull the engine and redo the piston? Clean up the piston in motor? Obviously get the heads cleaned up and replace all the springs, seats, retainers and pushrods.

Thanks for any help !!

John

its hard to tell due to the valve relief in the piston to see how hard the valve hit.

How do you go about cleaning up the piston? If having to say debur, is there any worry about tiny metal pieces going down the cylinder walls? Same question with removing the carbon. Thanks

clean up all the coolant first, then bring each piston to TDC and use a shop towel and some brake cleaner and a scott lite brillow pad to get the really hard carbon build up off. then use compressed air and blow everything clean.

If you have to debur the valve relief you could use some really fine sand paper and have a shop vac on it as well to make sure the burs don't go between the piston and cylinder wall. Also one thing to think about is did hurt the ring land on that particual piston as well? I had this problem and is why I'm now replacing the motor.

Did you have to rebuild or just clean up?

Be glad they didn't end up something like this.

Careful, pics are freaking HUGE, but lots of detail.

Notice the exhaust valve to the far right of this pic:

If you use the same rings I dont think you have to rebuild, that piston did not look to bad IMO though, can prob clean up and move on after replacing valve, springs, and pushrod.

At least pull that piston and check it out for anyother damage. Look at the rod bearing also. If you see nothing else wrong than just clean it up, debur the top and reinstall.

Thanks,

BTW, if they were just off the shelf Diamonds we can get you one replacement. That is always a option, that way you won't have any worries.

Mike,

Well, you know it's a JPR motor. If you recall I was at JPR's around 3:00pm the day you had left his house heading back to Florida with Vince. Part of me wants to pull it and have it all checked out after reading the horror stories that happened to you, ezss and Bear as well as a myriad of other players ( 11Bravo, the list goes on ).

That sucks, Viper...sorry to hear about your troubles.

Another JPR built engine bites the dust...big surprise there.

BADSS,

Any idea what valves were/are in your S2 heads? I never got confirmation. Thanks man.

Like most else, if I didn't have bad luck I wouldn't have any!!

They are supposed to be Ferrea 2.02" intake and 1.55" exhaust...but I wouldn't swear to it.

You might want to get them independently flowed while you have them off the car...I know they never made the power you were hoping for.

I made a best of 420 RWHP & 400 RWTQ with that combo, but I also added an EWP and FAST intake with the 90mm TB.

Good luck, hope you get back up and running soon!

I think it may be a while till it's running; I'm still 10K or so in the hole from round one from 2002. With the heads I think I recall hearing his flowbench was 30cfm off so the heads definately need reworked.

I feel for you, brother. Who are you going to have rework the heads? I would recommend TEA or Jay at Absolute Speed. Jay is kinda slow, but his work is top-notch.

I'm up in the air on the heads; if I need the engine redone ( or decide to do it in leiu of JPR working on the motor ) I will see if I can get a little better deal getting a motor and heads at once; say TSP or APE.

Viper,
Got your email, working on putting prices together. We can cut you some slack if you wanted to do heads and a block at the same time. I think that we are a authorized JPR repair facility! It sucks that the valve wacked the piston.

Thanks
