Default So many cams out there. How do you choose 1?

I don't know how you guys do it. There are so many companies out there who make cams for ls1s, how do you go about finding the right one for you without making cam swaps every weekend? For instance, I see a lot of folks running Futral cams. I went to their site to see what seemed like an unlimited list of cams. Damn. I never had this problem with my lt1. I am considering a cam for my SS but am even more confused now than before. I don't mind lope at all as long as the cam is very streetable. I've always loved the sound of the little cam in my lt1 and have heard very few ls1s that have sounded as good. When I did hear one I liked, it was always a monster cam. My SS has 124k miles but the motor was very well maintained when I got it. In fact when I bought it, there was no piston slap until I started racing it. What would you guys suggest for me?

Too much work, I think he should just get the Gigantor, it will be the cam of the week in a few weeks anyway....

It's important to match your entire combo to your camshaft. Find someone who you can trust to do that for you to optimize performance....

I don't mind doing research but I can get short on patience. It took a year on what I should do with the blown up motor in my lt1 and ended up going back with another stock shortblock.

I don't want to make this mistake with the SS. I'm hearing alot about the f14 but it sounds a bit too big for my taste. I'm thinking f13. Of course the tr224 sounds like a good candidate. see what I mean, I'm confused already.

1- Do a leakdown test to see if your shortblock is still within "healthy" parameters.
2- You said very streetable, so I would stay with a cam of 224 duration or less.
TR 224 or similar.
3- keep in mind you'll need around $1500 bucks to do a proper cam change, ( cam, springs,p-rods, timing chain, oil pump, gaskets, oil, coolant, lube, tuning and a few other stuff) that is assuming you are doing it all yourself.

no matter what cam you end up with, somebody will post up "this cam is better than your cam"or whatever.don't sweat a few degrees duration here or there.educate yourself then pick one.i have the tr220 114lsa and it is a good little cam, slight lope, very streetable.the tr224 is what a lot of guys are running and is one of the best all around cams for stock headed motors and will make around 10 horses more than what i have, but i wouldn't take the motor apart for that small of a gain.don't stress over a few horses here or there.

I hate to be a thread pirate, but do you have any numbers or times with your set up?

To give you an idea I have an '00 vette with home ported LS1 heads, LS6 intake, longtubes catted x-pipe and catback with a Texas Speed 237 cam (231/237 .598/.595 112lsa) and it idles just fine since it wasn't built on an aggressive cam grind. This cam I would recommend to anyone wanting good streetability and good power. I am running 94mph in the 1/8 with consistant 8.0's on full air pressure street tires and an extremely slipping clutch. That is roughly 415-420rwhp. If you have a similar combo you will love this cam as it idle and drives good down to 1500rpm and has a nice lope at idle. Good luck.

went over whose head? The way I see it, you don't have to weed through these posts. There are folks on here who don't spend every waking moment on these boards and would only like honest answers not stupid remarks. Responses like yours certainly aren't necessary.

Sounds like the same questions I had. I also felt that there was no way in h*** that the f13/14 would pass emissions. I'm glad I chose the f4. Great street manners, medium lope, and a nice power increase. Good luck in your search. I'm glad I'm done
