I have run the 987's personally and have had no trouble.

My TEA 5.3 Stage 2's came with the dual 987 springs.

I've heard of ONE 987 breaking in like FOUR years. The 987 has FAR fewer issues than 941's, 918's or REV-1116's etc.

SRP tested my 987's to make sure they were up to the task of SRP's 224 custom cam with XE-R lobes. All the 987 springs were right on the money. TEA had set the springs up exactly as they should be height wise and all the springs were good.

Never had or heard of a problem with them. Great spring IMO.

I will be taking mine off and haveing them sent to be analyzed here in the next week or so. I will post the results of how the spring rigidity has held up.

MY TEA Stage 1 heads came with the 987 springs. TEA does not mess around and sells proven go-fast stuff for a great price. A solid setup for sure. If you pull the heads, it is a wise investment to have your heads done so a larger diamter spring (1.440") can be installed.

ttt
I'm watching this one closely. Broke a 918 and am thinking of switchin to these. It seems that even if you break one these chances are it will break in a way that it does not drop the valve. In that case it is only a nuisance and not such a big deal.

CC 987s require the heads to be machined don't they? I have been told that they don't and somebody at Thunder told me they do.

The 5.7L and 4.8/5.3L heads do have to be machined to accept a 1.440" OD dual-spring, such as the 987 (not sure about the 6.0L head, though - maybe someone with some experience with those heads can chime in, but I bet they are the same as the 5.xL heads).

As others have mentioned before in this thread, TEA uses the 987's and does an excellent job with them. My TEA Stage II 5.3L heads were set up with them, and they have been rock-solid so far. I don't think you can go wrong w/ the double-spring as long as you've done your homework and have everything else to complement the setup.

Good luck!

I thought the 987's were the doubles that didn't require any machining? If not, which ones don't?

Joe...If i'm not mistaken..the REV springs are the dual ones that don't require any modification of the heads.

Yes the head must be machined. And the 987 is a daul coil spring.

Yup.

I didn't get a printout of all the springs like I had asked, but each one of the springs still exhibited the advertised seat pressures within a couple lb's (I don't have the sheet infront of me ).

This is after road racing / drag racing / nitrous abuse on a 226/226 112 .554 cam for over a year.

Good Spring
