Default PICS of engine swap - dropped from bottom in my home garge - no lift!

Who said you need a lift to drop it from the bottom? When you have great help with knowledge, anything can be achieved. Thanks Cannibal! I am going to switch everything over tomorrow, and put the new engine on the cradle. Then, we have to wait for my Kooks headers to arrive. I hope to have them by wednesday, but we'll see...

By the way, I would highly recommend dropping the engine to do a heads and cam swap. I have done it in car, and I am telling you it is easier to drop it without question. It may seem harder, but I promise it will save you so much time. Enjoy the pics and fire away with any questions guys and gals.

Those are awesome pics! Unlike what he did, we never once jacked the back of the car up. We just pulled the E-brake and went to work. We pulled it all too - tranny, engine, exhaust, torque arm, etc. Just letting people know it is not that difficult.

jrp,

Damn, the jackstands on the wheels looks very dangerous! That's just great that you did it in the driveway, lol. As stated above, I'm sure your neighbors weren't too happy, lol.

I hope to have it all buttoned up and on the road by next weekend. I won't have my headers until the middle to end of next week. :\

Well, there were a lot of us there, so that meant a lot of BSing, and not as much work going on as had hoped. But, if you count actual work time to get the engine out, I think it could be done in a couple hours. Install won't be so bad. We may run into a few snags with finding nuts and bolts, but it will all go together smoothly and with a few hours of investment.

Is there a neccesity to removing the intake? Other than being able to d/c the wiring? Did you chain the lift around the radiator support or where? Always like these threads.

We removed the intake manifold to disconnect the grounding bolts from the back of the cylinder heads.

We never once used the hoist to lift the car. We only used the hoist to take the engine off of the cradle, and we didn't even need it for that - we just wanted to say we used it, lol. We used 2 large racing jacks - one for each side of the car. We took out all of the bolts holding the engine cradle and transmission to the undercarriage. Then we set the car down so that the engine rested on an engine dolley, but do not the the cars weight on it. Just let it down enough so the engine is making contact with the dolley. Then we removed the strut tower bolts. Nothing is holding your engine to the car at this point. Then, we positioned the jacks as far forward (front of car) as possible, jacked the car up and then slid some huge jackstands behind them onto the subframe connectors. This alone gave us enough clearance to get the engine out. Just be careful not to put the jackstands too far back, or your car can turn into a teeter-totter really quick.

Bottom line, an engine hoist is not needed to gain clearance to slide the engine out - we made more than enough room with jacks alone.

Dunno about the way you guys have the cars up in the air after the motor is out. Why not lower the car down to reasonable levels while you do the work on the engine? I wouldn't trust jackstands at that pitch.

Thanks. I plan on doing it nearly the same way, I have access to a picker, so will use that for a little easier raising of the car. I am doing it out the bottom with a K Member/A Arm and Shortblock swap. Might wait and add heads to the shortblock, and then if I keep waiting who knows.

I have pulled them out of the bottom as well.. But only LT1's.. Never tried it with the LS1 but there should be no differences really.. I used a lift and just lowered the car down on the ground, took all the bolts out and lines loose and then just raised the car back up.. Then rolled the kmember out from under the car with the wheels/tires and motor/trans still attached. Then when the new engine and trans were on the kmember I just rolled it right back under and bolted it up. Was really easy!

I have pulled a few kmembers out from the side on the ground just like STROKDLS1 did his.. I would think it would be easy to do it that way even with the motor attached and the car doesnt have to be all that high off the ground that way..

I really prefer this way.

It works well and is relatively straight forward.
