408 Shortblock what do i do to clean the rust?

Default 408 Shortblock what do i do to clean the rust?
Ok guys heres the story, i was in the middle of my 408 install when Katrina decided to pay a visit to us. I stored it in a garage covered and coated with some oil. Anyhow the garage ended up leaking from all the rain and now i have rust on the top of my block where the heads bolt down and rust in the cylinder walls. How do i go about cleaning this and getting everything back to normal. Any help is greatly appreciated.

well i think i have a good idea, im gonna get a scotch bright pad and some WD40 that should be non abrasive and not damage anything, it will just take a little work. If this is a bad idea let me know

I don't know if you have an iron block (I'd assume so) but I would be VERY careful not to scratch/damage the cylinder walls. Good luck.

Well conidering that aluminum doesnt rust Id think it would be safe to say its iron.


How far into building the block were you?? Might be beneficial to get a new block if the rust is too bad or into the cylinder walls. I know mine was only $400 for the block.

do not use scotch brite what so ever. those little pieces of scotch brite will have its way on the bearings.

its not bad at all, but i want to be sure to clean it all 100 %. I plan on flushing it out with fresh oil after i clean the rust out. I'm gonna be very thourogh

There are rust remover chemicals in a spray can. Find that and scrub it with some of those blue paper towels with out the lint.

Navel Jelly which can be bought from Autozone or Auto stores is a jelly likely chemical that can be spread on rust and it will chemically dissolve rust.

when I've cleaned that part of the block i used break clean and a scraper.. you just need to be carefull and everything will come out nice..
