Default Free LS6 heads from an '04 GTO...Worth the swap?

The heads won't cost me a penny. I don't have the funds right now to get them ported, maybe I can hand polish them, but I doubt it. I'll be doing the swap with a buddy, so it'll essentially be free (with the exception of new gaskets, ARP head bolts, etc).

Assuming my tune is spot-on, in your estimation, how much MORE rwhp can I expect to make with a set of stock LS6 heads from an '04 GTO? My mods are in the sig. Just trying to decide if it's worth the swap.

I just can't stop modding. Burned up my trans recently and I'm already trying to make more power!

Isn't there a number for guys like me to call?

LS6 from an '04 GTO?

Am I missing something major....I thought the GTO only had the LS2.......

Edit: Forgot LS6 heads were used on the LS2.

A number to call? Dude, you are cam only. You have a long ways to go. So do I.

LS2 heads are LS6 heads.
You should see a decent gain from them. I'd search for cam only Z06 dyno graphs. If they're free, I'd jump on them.

^^^ yae check the casting numbers on the heads before you go ahead and start the swap. if you get the heads for free and they're 241 heads, then you can atleast sell those and get some cash from it.

241 heads - the "good" ls-1 heads
243 heads - ls6 heads.

The general rule of thumb is that you dont trade stock for stock to gain power. The heads flow better but not that much better to justify putting them on stock. You won't gain that much, and in my honest opinion isnt worth the money to spend on gaskets and bolts. "You should see a decent gain, check z06 graphs"?!? This is not even close to being a good comparision for him. My guess is that you wont see as much 6hp gain. Thats a lot of work and money for ony 2-4hp

2-4hp? You've got to be kidding me.

People have put on stock LS6 heads and gained over 10rw, closer to/over 15 with a cam if I remember correctly.

I'd like to see it, I'm not trying to rain on this guys parade at all, free heads are awesome but I dont think he'll see that kind of gain. Yes I know he has a cam and it will definately help, but 10-15 hp? That would have to be proven with some dyno graphs to me. Think about it. You saying that he'll pick, up roughly half 50% (15hp) of what he would with ported and polished heads which are usualy a 25hp-35hp maybe 40hp if your lucky gain. (unless your talking $3000 heads). I think maybe 5hp would be tops. Honestly. They dont flow that much better, it not a total different design. Has it been decided that they are ls6 heads or 241 heads? I'm going by 241 heads, the ls6 head would flow of course better but I still doubt 10-15hp better.

if they are ls6 heads, then yes, why not. If they're from an 04 GTO, they're just the 241's so no.

I say you get the free heads, and I'll give you a hundred bucks + S&H for them.

Personally, I'd save up some cash and have them ported, then put them on. No sense in putting them on stock, when a port job isn't terribly expensive, and the gains MUCH more dramatic.

...that, or sell 'em to me.

Guys your have to realize he sais 04 GTO which is a LS1 head.
He also says LS6 heads which would be from a 05 GTO.
I agree with Cypher and have seen nice gains going from a LS1 to a LS6 head, but going from a LS1 to a newer LS1 dosent make much since.

IF they are a true LS6 head go for it. You should see more than 2-4 hp from them.

Though as others said, if they are newer LS1 heads don't bother.

I was under the impression that the '04 GTOs had the LS6. Same motor as the C5 right? The heads are def. from an '04, I'll have to check the casting numbers.

I know the '05 GTOs have the LS2, but I thought the LS2 had their own "LS2 heads". Man I need to brush up on my late model engine knowledge.

Anyhow, I'll let you guys know what the casting number is. Maybe I will just hang on them and have them ported later.

All 04 GTO's have the standard LS1 engine/head. Which is the same as a C5 Corvette.

The C5 Z06 has LS6 heads and all LS2 engines have LS6 heads.

Yeah, they're the good old 241 castings. That sucks, guess I'll have to wait to have them ported.
