looks like a giant c clamp. you slide it over the valve, adjust the slack out and sqeeze. pretty simple, but some of the double and tripple spring are an absolute bitch to do with them. your hands will get sore

you can get a Valve spring compressor tool at AutoZone or Advanced Auto for $25. That will work because you are doing them off the car. You would only need the Tim's Tool if you were doing them on the car.

would it not work either way? i figured another 5 bucks to have my own isnt too bad. if it works, it works right. my main concern is keeping the valves up. i dont have to worry about the height and all that stuff cause the valves have a slot for the locks to lock right?

Either tool would work. I think the AutoZone Clamp over the top style would work best.
This one. $25 Advanced Auto
If you are doing them off the car. The valve will be on the bench, so it will not fall. The slots for the locks are in there, so you don't have to worry about getting them in the wrong spot.

I've got the Tim's or Larry's tool .. whichever. Doing the springs off the car was a peice of cake. Don't have to worry about TDC w/ the pistons or anything. Just crank the compressor down, let up, replace seals, put in new seats, and new springs ... compress again.
You don't have to worry about messing anything up w/ the head off the car. Its when they're on the car that you've got to worry about dropping valves, etc.

I ended up buying the Vinci tool, which may still be on sale. I will have to grind away at mine, because the tool is tight between the PP Golds and AFR225's valve cover bolt bosses are too big in diameter for the tools hole.

That is a good one for the beehive 918 style springs.
... and there is a slot for the locks. I used a magnet to pull them out when compressed, and you dont have to worry about dropping them all over the freaking place. And yeah a light tap with a dead blow can get them to let go of the valve if they want to hang on there.
