Default scratched heads...okay to use?

I have a set of 5.3 heads and one of them is fine, the other one has a bunch of swirls on it around the combustion chamber. I don't know how it got there (let somebody borrow them, then they didn't use them and used some 6.0 heads..). I can't post a pic of them right now because my computer is screwed and won't be fixed until later this week.
The scratches are very light, some are deeper than others. Can I just mill them maybe .005-.010" and be safe? Anyone else had this problem?

Well are they on the deck side of the head? you could just get them "clean-up" milled, and would be ok. But if you were talking about where the headers bolt up, then I would think that the gasket would compensate. But yeah, cleanup mill would always do good if you were thinking about installing them and they have been passed around or just sitting there. that way you will know that the deck is flat and not warped.

Yeah, it's on the deck side. The chambers are fine though.

Yeah. I would just take it to a machine shop and (both of them, but you probably already knew that ) but anyway it is a good idea to clean them up on the deck side because it will insure that you have a better seal.

Plus it couldn't hurt to have a tad bit higher compression!

That's good to know that it can probably be taken care of with the milling and the compensation of the head gaskets.

Do you happen to know how much compression a stock Shortblock LS1 with the 5.3 heads milled .010" would be?

Thanks for all your help!

I am no expert by any means, but I would say that if you took a good amount off of there you might have to change out pushrods and such, but a basic .010" probably not. It would be fairly close to 11 probabl like a high 10. But I am also not too familiar with the 5.3's either. I am sure someone else can beat it to death on what is what, and there probably is a calculator out there that can tell ya too. I had 30 thousandths taken off mine, and I still don't know what the CR is!

Hope this helps out! some

Stock 5.3 heads milled .010" should give you roughly a 60cc chamber. As long as everything else is in the stock configuration, gaskets and such, you would be looking at 11:2:1 compression on a stock LS-1 short block.

what about a 61cc chamber? Is the higher the CC number, the more compression or vice-versa? I have some LS6 heads that yield a 61cc chamber. Would I be looking at a 11:0:1 or 11:4:1 compression? This is on a stock LS1 FYI.

Thanks!

If I went no higher than that and used 93 octane, would that be okay in a daily driver?
