Valve Spring Swap... and the Valve goes down with the spring
Quick question... maybe Tally TransAm can help me out again... but how do you keep the valve from going down with the valve spring????

You have to put compressed air into the cylinder through the spark plug hole, the air will hold the valves up. The tool is availble all over the place...
I do have compressed air in the cylinder. Im using the tool tally trans am suggested to make. The valve spring pullers I have used are crap and took 3 hours to do 7 springs.
If you tap on the retainer with a rubber ended hammer the valves will not go down anymore as tapping the retainer frees the keys. Good luck.

compress it just til the valve opens and the air is coming out
then hold the pointed end of a phillips screwdriver on the retainer right by where the flat part of the retainer and the little hump meet(i actually used the phillips bit from a multiscrewdriver) and tap the end of the handle lightly with a hammer or your rachet a couple times and the valve should pop right up along with the keys

40 to 45??? LOL... I had it at 80-90.
Started going real slow when I started compressing them and they popped. Couple of them I had to coerce into popping loose.
Just got the rockers on hand tight... going to torque them down to 20 and then turn the motor over by hand and feel for resistance.

Tally TransAm... that tool is the $h1t!!!! Made it so incredibly easy it's pathetic.
Did hit the top of one valve with the retainer when i was compressing it though... backed it off and compresser came on and pushed it back off.
Hopefully everything else from here goes nice and smooth.
Oh... quick question... crank pulley... tap it on soft with a mallet??? Or throw a little pb blaster or wd-40 on there to start it?

that thing is great aint it, once you figure it out is makes it so easy
for the crank pulley, i bought a bolt of the same threads that was longer, and a bunch of washers to use as spacers, and started it with that. i didnt like the idea of hitting it with a mallet, might work though. im sure that and some wd40 could get the job done

How do you work that thing? I know you explained it but i really don't understand, I am kinda curious to see how it works. My valve spring compressor worked like a champ, until it broke <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> , but i am getting it replaced. All i did was wiggle the compressor back and forth and the keys would be lose. I never used and air fitting and never had any probs.
I've never used compressed air to hold up the valves, the hose gets in my way and it's a pain in the ***. I just turn the motor over until the piston is at TDC so the valve can only drop 1/4 inch.
