Will this cam work w/stock pistons, no valve relief?
A friend of mine wants to use this cam that I used to use before the Vortech SC, Comp XER 234-240 5.98/6.08 on 112lsa. I had Wisco pistons w/ valve reliefs, he has a stock bottom end w/stock pistons. Will he have clearance issues with that much lift?

I am going to stay yes you will have to fly-cut to fit that cam in...
BTW... That cam has 62 degrees overlap at .006 lift and 13 degrees overlap at .050 lift... most of that boost is going to be shoved straight out the exhaust....

Well im the friend that wants this cam. I really want to put this in without having to mess with the pistons. but its not looking this way now. to have the pistons cut for the valves to clear do you have to take out the entire engine and take out the bottom end? Thanks

All you do is pull the heads off and rent a head that comes with the Isky tools and you're in business. Install your new cam put a degree wheel on and check distances with a dial indicator and as a back up after you cut .060 or .080, clay the piston and it will tell the final story. There is a write up with pictures on exactly how to notch, use the search feature.

people run the T-rex and the magic stick with over .601 lifts all the time without flycutting the pistons....as long as u have stock unmilled heads you'll be fine with that cam

It's not the lift that gets you, it's the overlap area. A friend of mine runs .630" lift with stock pistons and milled heads.
There's no way I'd run your cam in a stock engine without valve releifs.

It's a G5X3 cam on a 112. If I remeber correctly, LG recomended fly cutting for this cam at first, but after they saw how tight you could run these motors, decided it wasn't neccasary any more. The lifts have jack to do with wether it will clear or not. It's the lift/duration in relation to the piston that matters. You can have a .900" lift cam as long as it opens when the piston is at BDC. Either way, you'll be fine running that cam without reliefs, however you should be careful on missing shifts or over revving. You also want to make sure you have excellent springs so you don't float the valves.

I think what you guys just don't get is that a cam can fit, but how close of a fit. I've got a Comp XER 228/230 112+2, a lot of people would say it will fit, well I only had .045 clearance at 8* btdc. Intake valves should have a minimum of .080. If I leave it like that and don't notch what happens if I float the valves or have an over rev situation. It's better to be safe than sorry.
We recently pulled the AFR heads off a friend of mines car with a 224/228, guess what there were little arcs where the intakes had just bearily touched the pistons and cleaned the carbon off.

What were the rest of the specs on the 224/228 cam?
