Buy a case of the cheapest oil that you can find and a couple of cheap filters. Run the car a few minutes and then shut it down. change the oil and filter and do it again. You should be ok after a couple of oil changes. There is the possibilty that a little shmeg could still be floating in there. It's this or tear it all the way apart and go thru everything.

I'd be concerned that you only found one paper towel, but it you have the stock screen on the pickup, and you didn't see anything when changing the rod bolts, I'd say you are good to go.

Now on to your original issue; the most likely reason you don't have oil pressure is the pump is not "primed". Basically you have an air gap between the input of the pump and the oil sitting in the pan. Try filling the oil pump with as much oil as possible, then mount. If you already have everything back together, read the following;

I knew a guy who worked on a small 4 cylinder motor that hadn't run in a long time, and when he started it, it ran for almost 2 full mins before suddenly building oil pressure. One trick he passed down to me (that was told to him by a professional race mechanic) is to unscrew the oil filter (relieve any resistance in the system), crank it until oil flows through the filter mount, put the oil filter back on, and wha-la, you are good to go.

And I highly doubt there was anything wrong with the pump the kid sold you either (they are very simple devices; other than the check-valve there is not much to "break").

I primed the pump the second time I put it on...when looking up at the cam I noticed that it had a decent amount of oil on it, along with everything else.

Its got to be something else then...

Should I let it run longer then 5 seconds next time maybe?

If you are as unfortunate as me, you might have some bits stuffed into your lifters, but a friend of mine left a blue jean rag in my motor, not a simple paper towel. It ended up ruining my lifters and trashing my bearings.

Good luck and hope that you end up better than I did

Wink

I can relate to installs that suck, my cam install last year took 38 days, all because of a couple of little dots, and 1,000 more for valvetrain parts I trashed. My best advice to you is take a break for a couple of days, think your problem threw, ask, read, get as many more opinions as you can, soak up this knowledge, and man up, you caused the problem threw error, hey we all have been there, save you money, and remember if you were smart enough to screw it up, your smart enough to fix it up. You can fix this yourself, if I can do it you can to. Good luck! Remember we are all here to help you the best we can. I love this site. Thanx again to everyone here on helping me threw my nighmare cam install a year ago.

I can't remeber if the rings are new in this motor or not but if they are, you are not supposed to run synthetic oil until after the break in. Something about the rings not seating properly or something. My 402 came with a big tag on it to not run synthetic until after the break in period.

So I got everything back together. I just need to put some new oil/filter in and some coolant.

How long should I let it run with the new oil before I change it?
I should stick with synthetic correct?

Anything else I should do before I fire it up?

I would think that the longer these paper towels sit in oil, they are going to deteriorate pretty quickly. I think the recommendations of changing the oil and filter a few times will probably work. We all have done something by accident, **** happens. Just stay positive and keep the eye on the pressure guage. Time is on your side.

don't feel bad.i installed my coil packs backwards and when i fired it up,it backfired so loud i was sure i screwed something up.what happens is you get so focused on not screwing up the hard part of the install, the simple stuff ends up biting you in the ***.if you only turned it over for a few seconds you didn't screw anything up.i think it took at least 5+ seconds for my oil pressure to build when i turned mine over for the first time.

So you dont have second gear with the motor running, or what? I was under the impression the car still isn't running...?

I would wait until the car starts and then worry about second gear. Could just be from sitting so long - no oil on the synchros or something. I think the engine will be fine, for any **** to get into it, it would have had to go through the oil filter.
