Question Mobil 1 or switch to Royal Purple?

Well guys just as the title says i was just wondering what you would do. I am going to change my oil on my WS6 with 32000 miles on it and i was just wondering should i make the switch to Royal Purple? I always change my oil every 3000 miles with 5W-30 Mobil 1 but i have read alot of good things about Royal Purple. There probably isnt a big difference betweent the two but i just wanted to get some opinions.

I believe GM recommends Mobil 1 for the LS1 powerplant. It's what I've always used, seems like high quality oil. I would just stick with it, especially since I doubt you're making a ton of power. But that's just my opinion...

This Is Just My opnion. But I have Used Both and To me Royal Purple Gives More of a Butter Feel then MOBIL 1. IN MY LS1. GM recommeds Mobil 1 oil only Cause Royal purple OIL is an after market OIL. . PLENTY of MAGS out Now that U can Read the BREAK DOWN structure of the 2. Rp simply last much longer Eiather way they both are good oils to use.

I'm going to be doing dyno tests of 8 or so different synthetic 5w20's with datalogging on a Civic in a couple weeks. I'll post the results.

We chose a Civic since we only have to buy 4 quarts of each versus 8.

I thought you were testing oil, not spark plugs. Hopefully you don't think a motor holds 1 qt of oil per cylinder?????

If its a civic it doesn't matter what you put in it, It's STILL not going to make power.

Have you ever tried to buy Royal Purple on a Sunday or a Holiday, Wal Mart sells Mobil 1 in a nice 5 and 1 Qt bottles. My point being if your racing on sunday and need more oil-well I know wal mart is everywhere and open ! and if Mobil 1 is good enough for everything from Vetts to Raptor F-22's that is it's good enough for me.

Sorry, I'm used to race cars. Didn't know I needed to memorize how much oil is needed for every engine that we work on, that's what dipsticks are for. We have some LS1's that need 13 quarts of oil while others that take stock levels. So...

If you go Royal Purple you'll pick up about 9 RWHP too

Why don't you save yourself a bunch of money and just use regular non-synthetic oil. Just keep it clean and it all does the same job.

its been my experience that running synthetic oil will help your gas mileage. My moms impala went from 28mpg on regular oil and gets 30mpg sometime more now. my dodge when I run mobil 1 through it, it gets 2 more mpg than it does on the regular nonsynthetic mobil. a buddy of mine said he picked up some gas mileage too when he changed to mobil 1 over the nonsynthetic. if the other benefits of synthetic don't make it worthwhile that alone should since the extra gas mileage you get will pay for the difference in cost.

Royal Purple is laughing all the way to the bank. To me it has the consistancy of water.

mobil 1 is good , but it all depends on what you have. I personaly don't like it, GM only recommends mobil 1 on vette LS1, not all LS1, there is a slight difference in vette LS1 and camaro and tran Ls1, stock Ls1 on camaro was only 325hp versus LS1 on vette stock output 350h, anyways the oil pump on vette LS1 is different , suction screen changes, but like I said mobil 1 is still pretty good for any motor, in some camaros , mobil 1 produces a ticking sound , and GM does not recommend mobil 1 on 2004 GTO LS1 that has 350hp, I personaly like Q oil 5w30 and in summer I use Q 10w30 , Mobil 1 was turning dark to fast after I made it twin turbo. But that's my oppinion.

That will be intersting. I've heard RP will have gains, but how much over another high quality synthetic will be interesting....regardless of how many quarts you test.

The 30wt Royal Purple tends to shear. If you decide to use Royal Purple use Royal Purple Racing 41. It does not shear. It performs excellent in the LS1.

color don't mean squat. i don't recommend any "Q" quaker state products or Pennzoil, I've seen some abosuletly sludged up engines that ran those oils changed at 3k intervals. I've got over 100k and the inside of my motor is still clean.

there is not that much difference in the ls1's to make a difference as to which brand oil you should run. if you have a ticking sound that comes from running a different type oil you probably have some clearances that are a little loose that want a thicker oil that will help fill in the area.

By the way you get an oil change at a gm dealer you get a mobil oil product all GM and Dodge oils are made by mobil. Mopar 75-90 crosses over to the gm 75-90 we run in our cars and the mopar limited slip additive crosses as well as nearly every other oil and additive. so regardless of what GM recommends they still put mobil oil in every vehicle they build and every oil change that is done by the dealers.

I will say this if you want to run synthetic you should give you motor a "break in period" of about 5-10k before you switch to synthetic. It'll help get the rings and everything better seated before the synthetic gets in and slows down the wear.
