Default Oil Pan gasket

Can we re-use the oil pan gaskets? I'm dropping the pan to change the rod bolts and when I went to buy another gasket it was metal and $65 after my discount so I was wondering if there's any problem in reusing? Thanks.

I reused mine when I dropped it to do my oil pump. Id say 99% simply reuses it. Just do your best to get it to sit exactly where is was. Shoudl be real easy with the engine out of the car.

i just did a heads & cam on my car. the ls1 performance book i read to help me through it said it is not a good idea to reuse the gasket. so when i changed my oil pump i just bought a new gasket. i would change it but you can do whatever you want

Not all gaskets are the same. Did it simply say that it was not a good idea to use ANY gasket?

There is nothing wrong with reusing gaskets such as the oil pan, valve covers, manifold/header, etc if they are in good condition (which they usually are).

yea this book said not to reuse any of the gaskets. it is called ls1 ls6 performance. it goes over a complete rebuild. they may be wrong, but the way i thought of it as you have to pull your motor to change the oil pan gasket(to get it under the pipe that connects to the oil pump) so i would rather pay the 65 bucks now and save another motor pull if for some reason the gasket decides to leak..

I reused mine a few times and had a problem with it, the area near the oil filter was crushed too much and oil was seeping back into the pan area and I had low oil press, replaced gasket and it was fine.

It just depends on how many miles are on it and how old it is. I clean it off and take a close look at it. If the silicone is crushed, split, or deformed, forget it. If it is a low mileage car, you may be able to reuse it.

I replaced mine just to be safe and not have any issues...most manuals will tell you to use a new one as well.
