The timing set is unessacary, really all you need is a LS2 timing chain, and LS6 oil pump, and your cam and springs and you'll be ready to go. They suggest changing the pump because the LS1 pump has a history of failing, although it usually happened at low milage it can happen with a more miles. This could be a reason behind GM using LS6 oil pumps in the 01' and 02' F-bodies

I went with LS2 chain($28 Fred Beans) and LS6 pump($70 FBeans). The reason why they are recommended is simply because they are sitting right there exposed during the cam swap. So while you're in there why not swap/upgrade?

depends on how many miles you have on your motor. If you have under 100k and have good oil pressure i wouldnt bother changing either. Check your slack on your chain but you dont HAVE to.

On any 2000 or earlier, it's best to change the pump. They're not known to be the best.
