Ouch...those lifters look trashed. I guess the cam isn't in that good of shape either. What caused all that damage?

Cant say for certain, but if you look at the closeups, youll see the tooling marks from how the cam was ground. The cam whined like I had a blower under the hood. Its pure speculation, but i think the whine may have been the lifter rollers traveling over the small ridges (tooling marks) and that what eventually broke through the case hardening on the rollers. My comp grind is now in the car and its perfectly smooth on the lobes, and no more fake blower whine.

Ive got an email in to Allan to see what he thinks was the cause.

I have NEVER seen a cam with diagonal machining marks like that...

No wonder it whined like a SC. Probably sounded just like a gear-drive setup... Keep us informed...

But why install this cam upon inspection?

The surfaces on that cam are fucked... no way would I have put that in the car.

I don't care what alan tells you, that is most likly the cause of all your problems.

Do you have access to any equipment that will measure the surface roughness of the cam lobe where this is no damage or the roller hasn't gone over it? The photo's also seem to show the roller caused a rut in the lobe peaks, is that the case or is it just the photo?

Do you think improper lifter preload contributed? Reason I'm asking is that there has been previous threads about abnormally noisy FM cams.

I dont know what kind of equipment would be able to tell "roughness".

As for the rut, yes, the rut was caused by the worst of the trashed lifter rollers. It looks to be about .003 - .005 deep, just by eyeballing it.

My preload calculated to be about .025 less than stock using my 7.400 pushrods in stock heads. I dont think the preload would have mattered much past a little added valvtrain noise.

Basically its a torquer 2 on a 110 ICL

I cant believe how much harder this lumps and how much louder the exhaust is over the f-13. Although the ported heads and raised compression probably helped as well. Feels a little mushier down low but again this could be due to the heads. The engine free revs so much quicker than before though (like when rev matching).

I'd send that back to Cam Motion....looks like their cutter was dull and they didn't catch it.

id say that was your blower whine. did you notice this before you put it in? that is a manufacturing defect for sure.

Well ****, I've had that "blower whine" since I put in my Futral cam. I'm pulling the heads in a few weeks so I guess i'll check the lifters.

That is awful! I sure wish Alan would chime in. I was planning on ordering a F14 this week. But I sure don't want to go through all that mess! I sure hope I don't have to reconsider my cam choice because of the cam supplier doing shitty work.

Id say with the bad cam lobe cut possibly some metal flaked off the cam lobe then made its way to the lifter where it then caused the roller to essentially lock up... This would generate a huge amount of friction and of course premature failure. I think you have certainly found the source of your misery and many other F-cam users....
