Default Should I be Concerned

I currently have a 408 small cam 224 224 581 581 114 Stock 6.0 liter heads comp 918 springs and an STS turbo kit. Ever since I purchased the motor the valve terrain had been really noisy. I have Yellow Tera 1.7 rockers and was told that the rockers were just noisy. I figured that was true because I know other people with after market rockers that have noise issues. I have also heard that the comp 918’s are loud is this true? Lately I have just been getting tired of my car sounding like a diesel. I decided to just through my stock rockers back on since it is pretty easy to do. I was surprised to find that my stock rockers did not make a difference. My valve terrain is still really noisy. Does anyone have any ideas? When I had my 370 the rockers where real noisy and when I switched out my rockers it was quiet again this motor is different. Could it be springs?

Thanks,

Kane

I've got a 408 also, 244/248 .612/.615 115 cam, Comp lifters, dual springs, hardened pushrods, etc. It makes quite a bit of valvetrain noise. I think it's something you'll learn to live with. It does sound like the motor is going to fall apart sometimes. LOL

It almost sounds like a diesel truck. The car runs great but people ask me why it is so noisy. I guess I need to go find someone else with a 408 and see how noisy their car is.

So does anyone know what causes this excess noise?

slop in the valvetrain causes noise. I would get a pushod length checker tool and measure the length of the inatke and exhaust pushrods on cylider 1. find the length you need for zero lash and then add the amount of lifter preload you need.

you'll know exactly what length pushrod to use. im guessing right now you have 7.400s in there when you really probably need 7.425s to get the correct lifter preload.

Properly setup YT's are very quiet. I'm running them and my setup is very quiet.

So I have played around with pushrods and it does not seem to make a difference on the sound. It seems like the sound is comming more from the front of the engine. If the push rods where to short would you hear it around the entire engine? Most of the people who have listened to it have come up blank. The engine runs great just damn noisy and I would like to quiet it down. I am tired of being mistaken for a diesel .

Now if it is the push rods on non adjustable rockers how can you measure for clearance. I do not want to put to long of a push rod in and break a lifter.

Thanks,

Kane

Update:

After talking with several other people we have found that the set of COMP lifters I have are what is causing the noise. The shop that built my motor has a couple other cars that have this same lifter in from the same batch that are really noisy also. We also talked to a few other people who have solved this noise by changing lifters. My question is what lifter should I go with? Just put a new set of comps in and hope for the best?

Are you running the comp R lifters 875-16(magnum or whatever)? I have heard those make a lot of noise if you don't get the preload correct (they aren't like the comp replacement 850-16's). I bought a set of 875-16's in hopes of getting them adjusted correctly, would trade someone for a set of 850-16's if I could though since more people seem to be running them.

I am pretty sure they are the Comp R not sure the model. I need to look at my spec sheet again. My car sounds like a diesel esspecially since we quiteted the exhaust down. It sounds like I have solid lifters probably even louder. What is a good replacement it is a 408 small cam 224/220/581 581 114. I just want a normal sounding car again it is kinda embarrassing to drive.

I hear ya man, 850-16's are a well-rounded roller lifters and relatively inexpensive, check the sponsors, they're like $20 cheaper than the R's and have normal preload but dont have the "extreme rpm" rating like the R's do (not sure if this has actually been tested).

I am bringing an older post back from the dead. We did confirm that we have real noisy lifters.

What is a good replacement lifter because I am tired of the noise?
I have 6.0 heads and run boost what is a good headgasket I am not sure what they used before?

Thanks,

Kane

I still say to check your pushrod length. Valvetrain noise that is THAT audible means there must be slack somewhere. Lifter tick is one thing, but being so loud that you compare it to a diesel means there's a lot of play somewhere.

If you're dead-set on replacing the lifters though, go with a set of LS7 or Cadillac racing lifters.. they're only like $100-120 and can handle RPMs If I can't fork out the extra money for the Morels on my build, I'm going with LS7 or Cadillacs.

The push rod lengths are all inline. This noise is definitely the lifters they have replaced lifters in other cars with the exact noise and it goes away. We have tried everything else and I know it is not anything else because the car has been running great the last year or so I am just tired of the noise.

Proper preload, and therefore, pushrod length is going to differ between the two. See links below:
