Question How often should I be changing my oil? (Royal Purple 5w30)

I read these forums and see that people are talking about how they run for 5k to 9k miles between oil changes. Is this safe? I use Royal Purple 5w30 and change it every 3k miles. Am I wasting money?

Yes you could go longer on synthetic oil, but youre also wasting buying an oil that is really too thin. If you want to stick with RP, get the racing oil, otherwise switch to German Castrol 0w30, Mobil1 truck and SUV, or Amsoil Euro 5w40 as alll are proven winners in these engines.

just to clarify, M1 Truck/Suv used to be a 5W/40 weight. Now, its a 5W/30. The new 5W/40 from M1 is called Turbo Deisel Truck. Dont be fooled though b/c it should be pretty much exactly the same as the old Truck/Suv 5W/40. You may be able to find the old T/SUV 5/40 at some places.

point of the story, only buy M1 5W/40.

Both of these are very thin oils.

I run Mobil 1 5w-30 fully synthetic and it gets the job done. Thats the factory oil on all the corvetes and some fbodies. I change mine every 3000-3500 miles just to be safe although im sure you could go 4000-4500 maybe more on a good synthetic oil and not have a problem as long as you check it regurly and it looks aight.

most of the time synthetic oil doesn't look bad coming out of a car after 5000 miles. with synthetic i usually change it at 4000, but no, i don't think you're waisting your money changing it at 3000 miles. after all, you've gotta take care of your stuff!

i know Summit does, but im sure there is cheaper places to get it. i use 5w30 and it works great. isnt that how the saying goes "stick with what works" or something to that effect. i know amsoil is supposed to be the **** but its hard to get a hold of it, luckily my uncle is a dealer for it.lol
i remember my uncle was showing me some pics that he got from amsoil when he became a dealer. it showed pics of the inside of an engine after 3k miles of a brand of oil ( not going to say what kind) and there was a bunch of sludge and crap left in the engine after they drained the oil, then they put amsoil in the same engine for 3k miles with the sludge that the other oil left in the engine, and after 3k miles they drained the oil and took pics of the inside and the amsoil cleaned out all of the sludge left behind from the other oil and the inside was spotless. to sum it all up its some really good stuff.

i never heard that RP is to thin for our motors and from 1st hand use dont buy M1 5w30 it sucks and made my motor noisey and it burned alot more oil than th RP burns off. ive started useing royal purple 10w30 along with a few other friends and they all have had excellent results likeing the way there motors ran after the switch. as far as M1 5w40 i never tried that so i cant say. but doesnt RP make 5w40 also. and anther thing i wouldnt trust useing 0w anything in my motor just to thin in my opinion

Patman had results a while back of analysis after (don't quote me on this) I think 6k miles using the German Castrol and it looked better, held up better (retained viscosity), and had better analysis results than M1 5w-30 after 3k miles.

Bottom line, GC, Amsoil, or go home, although M1 5w-30 isn't THAT bad if you change the oil every 3k.

Perhaps youre uninformed / misinformed then. The 0w rating means that the oil is as thin as straight 0 at freezing (32* F) The second number is the viscocity at operating temp (boiling or 212* F).

German Castrol 0w30 is actually at the high end of the 30 wt sprctrum, and is almost a 40 wt. The 0w rating only means that it performs well in cold start applications. In lab analysis, German Castrol 0w30 has shown to be thicker than Mobil1 5w30 in all but the coldest temps. Countless test after test have shown far less wear metals and better oil quality vs. just about any other readily available oil. Do a little research before you scare people off with a statement like that.

Anyone who wants the straight dope on oil, head over to BITOG where very knowledgable people will speak volumes on the subject.

im not saying its bad srry if i scare someone off it just seems wierd to me guess im just used to 10w oil. anyway doesnt RP make a 5w40 also why r people so against RP it seems it runs so much better than M1 in my car and numerous friends as well. i have not tried GC i cant find it anywhere when i looked for the hell of it and AMsoil is hard to get but probably just as good to. my gf's monte carlo ss is also noisey after useing M1 so im against the stuff now srry
