Default 228r or MS3

I'm in the works of getting my heads and sending them back into Patriot for cleaning, any necessary repair, and larger valves (2.055 and 1.60).

I'm also trying to find the best cam for this setup and have narrowed it down to three possibilities.
- A 228R w/ .595 and 112 LSA
- TRAk (231/234 .640/.590 and 112LSA)
- MS3 (237/242, .603/.609 and 112 LSA)

I have all the mods in my sig. I'll most likely have 3.73 gears as well. Car will be a daily driver/street racer/weekend track car. Weight will be around 3100lbs. I'm looking for the most powerful setup and I'm pretty sure these 3 cams offer the best power/PV clearance I can get. Vote and leave your opinions!

You might want to check with Gunner about p/v on those heads with the cams you listed, not shure if it is going to be a problem for you.

The 228R and the MS3 are two totally different cams, the 228R is a midrange cam and the MS3 is a 7000 rpm cam, you need to figure out what you want your car to be before anyone can answer that.

you don't have any prereqs for high rpm operation, so i'd go with something more mid range friendly so you get your power without revs. i've had great experience with a FMS F10 cam, 228/.576 112+4 makes over 300lb/ft of torque at like ~2500rpm, and pulls past 6000rpm easy, making it a great all around, but not wussy by any means cam.

I'd say 228, great driveability, and plenty under the curve power.

Also, sorry I couldn't find the tracking number, but did you get the TC yet?

just installed my patriot heads on a 224/228 +0 113lsa Cartek 2x cam. .581/.588. SAE numbers in sig. Damn does it fly, and no need for big gears, tons of useable power and smoked an ls2 corvette like it was my honda civic.

Of those 3 i'd go 228R, but don't look past Cartek or another 224/228 cam. East Side Performance 100% recommends those cams. Sure MS3 you can gain 15+ whp, but useable power under the curve is insane on my cam.

Stevemilz you don't have to read or post in my threads. This forum is for posting and learning, not bitching and moaning.

Thanks for the opinions everyone else, just trying to find whats right for me. A lot of people have said the 228R-specifically a Cartek, actually. Several others swear by the MS3 and other larger cams. I was just seeing if anyone else is reccommending the larger cam with my setup since that seems to be the trend these days. I guess I'll be getting ahold of Cartek and getting things figured out.

And no, I haven't gotten the timing chain yet, but I've got plenty of time before the install!

It seems like you are selecting a cam by duration and don't seem to care about flow of heads, overlap, low lift, just to name a few things to really consider. First decide on the heads and what they flow. Next try to determine what your end result will be (FI, NA, N2O) then pick a cam that will work best. Selecting by duration is not your best choice. Do your homework and just because a sponser has a cam on hand dose not mean thats the best cam for you.

You tell um man. lolol. But seriously. Go with the 228 if your gonna use it daily. Thats a great cam and you'll be happy with the performance. I'm not sure but I don't think you'll have the clearance anyway for the bigger cam seeing as how your saying you're puttin in the bigger valves. You can't go wrong with the 228.

WS6RED2002TA The heads are Patriot Performance Stage 3 5.3L heads and flow 302@.600 CFM with 2.055/1.60 valves (297@.600 if I decide to stay with the 2.02/1.57 valves).

I plan on using N20, but it will be in the summer of 07. After the head cam install, I'm going to work on toughening up my new 10bolt, getting a good track suspension, and doing some weight reduction.

I'm going with the 228R. What are the exact specs you think I should order and should I just go through Comp or someone different?

i'd say save up for a 12 bolt or 9 ".you will have 410 + on motor so that 10 bolt will be a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.

Well its a brand new 10 bolt. When it broke I wasn't planning on keeping the car do to financial reasons, so I replaced it with a new $1200 GM installed 10 bolt (most costly mistake EVER).
Anyways, I've talked to a few A4 guys with the stock 10 bolts running 11sec 1/4s. I figure with a new 10 bolt, a good set of gears, a girdle and moser axles I should be alright for a while. Saving up 2gs for a new rear is NOT my idea of a good time...Do they finance??

omg please don't remind me.... I'm going to baby launch it at the track, the last thing I want to do is take 2000+ g's out of my 'downpayment for house' savings fund for axles.

IMO thats a good choice. As far as Cam Motion/Comp/Lunati etc. the most used is Comp, i'd just go with a proven performer. I think you'll love the 228R from TSP, or 2x Cartek, even TR228. All are Comp grinds.

How badly in straight line or at the 1/4 mile will a MS3 car BEAT a 228R cammed car with the only difference being CAM choice both with 3.90 gears.

Very Negligible. It would end up being more on the driver than the cam. the 228 better useable power band. Bigger is not always better. I have whipped many a bigger cam with my old 224 581 112 set up.

With those big valves you may run into clearence issues with any of those cams...
