In theory no, in reality, yes.

Needs to come off to get the power steering pump off unless you pull the pulley.

Other then that I cant think of any reason why it would have to come off?

I pulled it, just to do the shop vac mod. Worked like a charm

Yup...me 2. Maybe you could shop vac the water pump to minimize coolant spilling, and then take it off to shop vac the rest.

Water pump is an insignificant task compared to the rest of the head swap. I say just pull it and get it out of the way...

I left mine on, and pulled the pulley off the power steering pump. Can be done with it on, or you can remove it. But, if removing it allows the shop vac cooling removal method.... remove it. That's a way cleaner way to do the job

On the LS6 you can leave the water pump and pulley installed on the bracket. I backed out the bracket, and removed the resevoir to access the rest of the bolts. I modified the resevoir bracket, so next time it will be much easier and faster. Speaking of the shop vac. I made a hose fitting using a drinking straw, gets the coolant and oil out of the head bolt holes in seconds.
All you have to worry about is chasing the threads.
