If you aren't gonna go with spray then I'd stay with the aluminum 402..

You can run more timing with an aluminum block vs iron, too.

I have a 402 from one of the sponsors and the thing has smoked since day one! It now uses about a quart of oil every 126 miles, and still smokes like crazy! Is this something that is common?

WOW, u guys just don't know about the LS2 blocks do u? If it was between the LS1 or LS6 vs LQ9 it would be the LQ9. Now, this new LS2 block can handle 1000 crank HP. It seems the guys who are voting for the LS2 are the guys who know what they are really talking about (shop owners, tuners, gurus or whatnot).

Bar-non the LS2 is the winner.

Ur oil consuption is NOT the blocks fault, u need to call the sponsor u bought it from and tell them what's going on. ur rings are bad.

I'd probably go with the iron block for the direct port setup. I have several sets of special 408cid strokers going together right now. If I can help just give me a call!

What will be RWHP of one of these 408 ci engines runing on race gas. How much CR can you run with race gas used on an LS1 engine.

If money isn't a concern, I would definitely go with aluminum. Going with aluminum vs. iron is the difference between going 10.0x and 9.9x. The aluminum blocks have more then proven themselves over the years.

The $ isn't even that much, the engine conver kit from sdpc os like 400 bucks, and the block is 1295 vs 9xx for the iron. So figure 600 bucks more. To get 75-100 (depending on who you talk to) off the front of the car weight wise, for only 600 bucks to me is a no brainer. I know that the iron is more stable, etc.etc, but most people just aren't gonna push it hard enough for that to be a factor IMO. I mean how many people are really trying to make 900+ rwhp? Not that many, I think 75% or maybe even more of the guys looking at a 402.408 are putting them in street cars, that occasionally see the track, not dedicated track use only cars.

Isnt the iron block easier to hone when rebuilding?

they generally take less of a hone, but if you're doing a 402 with an ls2 blcok, there's enough sleeve to get a couple rebuilds unless you have a really drastic failure... which in that case could ruin a ls2 or iron block.

Plus, when the sleeves in the ls2 block are done, you can resleeve it and go big big.... iron, when it's done it's done, and depending on the block, .030 over in one may e as much as you want to safely go, there's shift that occurs in those as well.

To me it was a no brainer to go with the LS2 block for my setup because it allows for a large stroke and is light weight to boot. In a short time the LS2 block has been proven to be the strongest of the Gen III/IV aluminum blocks including the LS1 and LS6 block and more consistent in overall quality. I have yet to see one documented LS2 block failure because of nitrous. To each their own, but the LS2 block is a pretty stout block.

Drk, what did your car make for power? Curious, as your setup looks like a setup a guy I know is going with.
