Default HV oil pump dillema

My car is currently undergoing a H/C/I swap.

It is a 2001 SS. My oil pressure before the swap was always BOMB....much higher than my buddies F-bodies......even one that has a ported LS6.

At startup it is dam near 60psi (idle), and drops to about 50 psi at idle once it warms. It is well over 60 at WOT.

Well, to be safe since my motor was open, I ordered a GMPP High Volume oil pump: http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/4460...S-Oil-Pump.htm

Well, I am just scared that I will actually see a loss in oil pressure after the swap since I sem to have a factory freak pump in my car right now.

BTW--I run M1 5-30

Thoughts?

You need to jump into that other thread titled "oil pressure?".

although you may see a drop in pressure, you will actually have an increase in volume. so i wouldn't worry about it, unless it's REALLY low.

Bwhahaha

I know I would be fine with a small drop in pressure but it is just kinda depressing

One of those "If it ain't broke don't fix it" dilemmas.

The current pump (before swap) has 50k on it though, so I figured I'd replace it.

Haha, so that explains that. He just said that he ordered it. Not installed.

Switch to an LS6 pump straight up. Don't get a ported one if you are worried about what it reads. Plus high volume isn't the answer in most cases.

I already have the high volume one at my mechanics about to be installed.

HV for $66 > LS6 for $100+ IMO

I think the one in my car to start with might be an LS6, I remember reading they came stock on 2001s

Could be. You will be fine either way. Just as long as the O-ring does as it is supposed to on the pckup tube all will be well minus 5-10 psi.

if it has a bigger gear like the melling pump you will get more pressure.that`s the only way to move more oil.

Did anyone ever bother to check the oil pressure gauge against an aftermarket one tapped into the block to see if its accurate? The factory pump has a pressure relief spring set for 55psi which it should reach at 5,000 rpm at temperature. Alot of the ported pumps have a stronger spring/shim to raise the pressure thats how they get higher volume. Unless of course yall beleive that the accuracy of the GM gauges are infallible.

I put the mellings high volume oil pump in mine and I see around 65psi at idle hot and around 70psi cold.
