I had a similar problem, My piston looked exactly like that, and when I pulled the motor, I found the sleeve to be cracked.
Take your time with it, be patient, start shopping......

Get the motor on a stand and get her all apart. If the cylinder walls are all good, get a set of pistons hone it out, polish the crank install new cam.rod, and main bearings with ARP rod bolts and head bolts along with a new timing chain and oil pump. You'd have about $1500 in it if that's all that's wrong with it if you do it yourself. You saved yourself close to 1k if you can go that route.

i have both heads off now and everything looks good. im hoping the block is in good shape and the motor can be an easy fix if just the piston is chipped and everything else is fine. i need to get ahold of a cherry picker to get the bitch out sometime soon.

ya, im sure there is enough room once i get the radiator out, there is no top half o the motor, the intake is out along with both heads, so there is a lot more room in there.

When it happened to me, I also took the heads off while the motor was in the car, and thought all it was was a busted piston.
It wasnt until I pulled the motor, then ulled the piston, to see the crack on the cylinder sleeve.
If you can, try to feel the cylinder walls.
I hope you get by with just a busted piston!
