The stock LS1 springs suck *** and are barely adequate for the stock cam. Yes, you definitely need better springs for any aftermarket cams. The whole reason many LS1s bend pushrods is because their springs are too weak and allow valvefloat.

So are these 918s what everyone is using now instead of the 941s? How much lift can they take.

That's why the LS1 Hotcam kits are popular. Package price is $200 - $300 cheaper than most other cam packages.

I like the T1 better, but it is an option

Hotcam comes with its own springs, which are only a little better than the stock LS1 springs. Those should have been the stock ones on our motors.

No need to change pushrods, but it would be a good idea anyways.

Don't skimp when it comes to internal work on a motor. You typically get what you pay for, and these components are pretty cheap. We are talking about cars themselves that cost well into the $20K range here.

What does a normal shop charge for install of a Cam and springs? How many hours typical? (Just an estimate)

Since I have Zero expereince working on the inside of an LS1 engine i'd probably have CarTek put it in.

$500 is pretty fair. I haven’t done an LS1 cam yet, but I’ve done an L98 cam. There is a lot of disassembly/reassembly involved that is rather time consuming. Valve train is a little more difficult on L98s though, as you have to keep turning the motor while tightening down rockers, plus you have to pull the intake on those. An LS1 cam swap should be a little easier. But then again, at least on a third gen the whole motor was accessible without going under the cowl!

the LS1 is probably one of the easiest motors I have worked on. The more rear springs are more difficult but get the right spring compressor and its not bad at all. The cam part of its real easy.

I do all that too, and I've built several engines, and done one interesting swap. Go for it, you'll never learn if you dont try!

It is the fear of it. I know that. If I could of watched someone do it then I would feel better. But to do it on your own...ugh... I burned though a few motherboards before I learned what to do and what not to. Computers are cheaper then cars.

Install T1 cam with stock valvesprings, rev engine to 6200 rpm stock rev limiter. Stop car and get out. Look under car, and pick up large chunks of metal, that resemble pistons, or connecting rods that have been pushed through the side of the engine block. <img src="images/icons/mad.gif" border="0">

No way you can run T1 cam with stock valvesprings.

I am fairly certain that I can get a cam package (cam, springs, pushrods) for under 600 bones. Also I get free cam installs and can have my torque converter (when I get it) installed for a 100 bucks or less, but thats because I have an awesome car club and ofcourse I'll turn some wrenches too.
