Has anyone 'ported' a B&B exhaust?

Has anyone 'ported' a B&B exhaust?
I bought a B&B Triflow exhaust last week, and last night I noticed that when you look into the exhaust tip, there is a big restriction. Where the pipes are welded to the tips, the hole is rectangular in shape and a lot smaller than the pipes connecting to them. First thing I thought of was to port out the rectangular hole to match the shape of the pipe behind it. Has anyone else noticed this and/or ported it out? Do you think it would help?

my guess is thats what makes the b&b sound like b&b, when i take off the pass side tip of my borla, the sound changes quite a bit, put it back on and it sounds like borla again..

Interesting thing is that I looked at another two sets of B&B, and they didn't have that restriction. Maybe the restriction is only in the TA specific exhuast. Let me email them and see what they have to say about it.

Re: Has anyone 'ported' a B&B exhaust?
I had a B&B and cut out that restiction when I was doing some work on my car. It sounded much better to me. What I did was cut the tips off with a plasma cutter. Then cut out the inside. Then welded the tip back on. Then a week later I got rid of the muffler and replaced it with a Flowmaster 80 series (it got a little louder but.....I still want it louder so I'm going to go put LTs and a true duel).

WS6 John,
I would remove the restriction (heard it was a PITA). Apparently (and this is hearsay, so take it at face value ) B&B made the muffler change to reduce the resonance inherent to the B&B mufflers. I have an older B&B catback on my ZR-1 and it does not have the restrictions you mention. Through one of my mailing lists I saw where a gentleman recently bought a B&B catback for his ZR-1 and it DID have the restrictions as does yours. After removing them he picked up 7rwhp if I remember correctly.

I wouldnt think the "restriction" is that big a deal. You still have a pretty decent size opening for the exhaust to go through, although I have often thought about just taking the tips off?! Anyone try dynoing with and without the tips on? I do remember when on the dyno, I had condensation run out where the tip slips on the exhast, as opposed to dripping out the end of the tip.

Re: Has anyone 'ported' a B&B exhaust?
In the 5 months since I originally posted this, I have ported one of my tips. I used a die grinder and it was a serious PITA becuase of the gauge of metal used. The exhaust did get a fair amount louder. I was originally hoping to do a dyno run before and after, but then I realized how long it would take to port the tips and I knew I wouldn't be able to tie up the dyno for that long.
I think it gives it a fair amount of restriction. Its not the size of the opening that concerns me, but more the fact that the exhaust hits a wall on its way it. It has to cause a fair amount of backpressure.
Looking at the way the tips are made now, this was done to reduce manufacturing cost (increase margins), not to reduce resonance. The old tips look a lot harder to manufacture than these. I design products and these are typical changes that need to be made to reduce mfg. costs.

Re: Has anyone 'ported' a B&B exhaust?
Just did a little experiment and took off one of the tips. Man, the exhaust sounded a bit different and louder (read: meaner). I guess those tips are more for the B&B sound like what was said above. Too bad one of my tips is welded on, or I would take them both off!!
