I read that I should just soak it in motor oil, and then I read that comp cams should come with a gel or something, but mine didn't. what about the coating that's on the cam when I opened it? should I clean all that crap off?

I just coat with a liberal (a LOT) amount of cam lube.
Some folks use oil...
The stock coating? dont worry about it.. it aint hurting nuttin'.

dont forget to assure that the clocking
pin is in real good.. and if its a hotcam
to assure that its been tempered by noting
a blue from heat mark on the lobes..

Jim do you have a set of the Helm's manuals?
Very handy for all the work you have coming up.
We coated our in oil and they went right in. Lubes can sometimes clog the oil pump.

using the helms, sometimes they're more helpful than others.....
"Helms instructions for removing the engine:
1. disconnect the transmission
2. remove engine"
hopefully I'm not violating copywrite....

Dont need cam lube...seems more for non-roller lifters. In the 5 camswaps i've done, I just put some mobil 1 motor oil on it and slid it in.

That sounds more like a Haynes manual than the Helm. The Helms manual rules, Haynes sucks. Bad.
I clean the cam with brake cleaner, then lube it all over with 30 wt oil. With a roller lifter motor, no need to use assembly lube on a cam swap.

All I ever used (non LS1) was motor oil.
Well, except for that time when I was young and dumb and assembled a motor with STP.....

I used a libreal coat of Lubriplate. Was that bad? I have about 1000 miles on the cam now. Would I have seen a problem by now?

I think the reason why some folks spun bearings after a cam swap was due to say using too much moly lube when doing a cam... Then that stuff goes down and clogs the oil pickup.
