Default Bad gas mileage???

My gas mileage is really sucking right now. I went from 17-18mpg mixed to 14mpg. My car also sometimes backfires at high rpm. Sometimes the car will not idle. It just tries to die. I think that all these problems could be connected. Any Ideas???

TIA,

Stephen Heine

I have noticed more A4s getting better gas mileage than M6s during "around town" driving...must be the 3:23s

I just drove from Houston to Chicago with my car fully loaded, I did it in 17 1/2 hours!!! I was getting between 29-30 mpg and that was averaging about 73 mph, with 3 20-30 min.rest stops.

Your symptoms could be indicative of a few MAF problems and/or an air leak in your induction system. Might want to check that out.

Definitely sounds like you got a bad MAF or air temp sensor. Try resetting the PCM, if that doesn't work take it to the dealer for a diagnostic. Sounds like your running really rich at WOT.

I have the screen removed from my MAF. I know that the dealer will not warranty the maf since the screen is removed. Should I try some electronics cleaner on it? I heard you can get some at radio shack but i don't know what it is called.

Try changing your fuel filter. I changed the first one on my car at 13K and it was filled with all kinds of ****. That will definately affect gas mileage.
