Car cuts completly off while driving?? no power, no nothing...?? wtf
ok im gonna try to sum things up....
left my house this afternoon and about 2 miles from my house car cuts off...i coast into a side road and i have no power no where??? nothing works... pop hood... check battery connections...
but on a side note shouldnt car run with battery connected after i have it started????
anyway i pull battery and read it on tester... 12 volts... go to hook it back up and i notice when i connected the red terminal it flickers(i know power is being sent this time) and wham car has power again..... before when i loosened the ground i didnt get any sparks anywhere.. so could it be my red terminal wasnt connecting properly? that the adpater was kinda floating around in there, not making connection...
also i did pull all those big fuses in the fuse box under the hood... the 35-40volt??? ones... ingition, starter and etc.... would one of them being loose make the car cut off???
its done it a few times before but never cut off totally like that... before it would flivker the guage lights and stall sorta,, then be back on its way.. did it on a bridge once.. seemed like when i hit rough spots it would flicker....
any ideas??? sorry so long also... but this sucks and i get no ses lights so i have no clue????? what would cause car to totally loose all power while driving?

It should have kept running off the alternator once it was started. Probably should check wires there and then maybe see if you can get that tested. Or some major wiring glitch somewhere I guess. What has the volt meter been doing recently?

volt meter on car has been showing like it always has.. everynow and then it would dip to straight up.. other than that i havent noticed anything out of the ordinary from it..
its gotta be something loose somewhere... i know my n20 wiring isnt hurting anything..
but its something major for the car to shut totally off....

My mom's Aurora (4.0L Northstar V8, 4L80E (yes 80 not our 60) stalled out and had trouble running when the EGR system was failing.

ok i think i fixed the prob... note i said "i think" lol...
but the 12 volt side post on the drivers side... well it was loose... you could take that battery wire that goes to it and turn it around and move it up and down a little.. prob enough to make it break or lose connection... also i noticed the car over all seem to be running better... the voltmeter seemed to be charging higher than its showed in a while.. well i hope this fixed it, if not it didnt hurt anything lol... so if anyone else had this prob or cutting off totally, or guage lights flickering and etc check that side post terminal on drivers side... the one with red cover on it <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

Check:
1) Bad EGR, there is a recall for 98's. I did it.
2) Loose, corrode battery cables
3) Burned positive battery cable going down by #4 and #6 header primaries
4) Autotap for ignition voltage with an ASP crank pulley I see 13.1/13.2 but when my regulator was bad in the alternator it went from like 12.5 to 13.5 and cycled like crazy.

How about a bad engine ground? Check the ground wire on the driverside head. Make sure it's still attached to the chasis. (???)

I had this exact problem with my car. Granted it's an LT1, but it sounds exactly like what happened to me.
Like you, my car would start ok, but when I started driving I lost all power. So I popped the hood and went straight to the battery. The positive cable was very loose and seemingly "finger tight". So, I tightened it back up and all was fixed.
