Default Cam swap tips, illustrated in a jpg

I've heard people telling others they'd need to remove the A/C condensor to swap cams (which is untrue). I've also heard people talk about the magnet trick to hold up the lifters.

Well, I happen to be swapping the cam on my car for the 5th time (dont ask) and I got a good shot proving the magnet thing works great, and the a/c can stay charged.

The magnet trick:

The A/C condensor hanging out of the way to give full clearance for the cam to come out:

Fun stuff. FYI, The magnets were in the automotive section at walmart, $1.88 apiece.

Nice pictures!

What are you supporting that nylon strap tied to the AC condensor? Is it just tied to the hood???

And now for the $64,000 question:
What cam are you going with now???

You change cams about as often as I change my oil, LOL

JMX,

Can you post a picture of the magnet you bought from WalMart by itself? I plan on doing a cam swap myself and am interested in the magnet trick. Did you use air pressure to hold up the valves?

Very nice pics.

FYI, you don't need to hold up the valves to do just a cam since the valve springs are still in place.

Good work.

If you're upgrading the valve springs, which should be done on any cam install, you will need something to hold up the valves.

Its tied to part of the latch on the underside of the hood. The hood supports the weight of the condensor.

I went with a thunder 224 cam on a 114lsa this time around...My last cam would have been perfect if it'd worked a little better above 6500rpms.

Hopefully this will be my last cam change in a long while. <img src="gr_eek2.gif" border="0">

MMiller, I'll post a pic of them when I get home from work tonight.

On my personal car, I've always installed heads at the same time as the cam, or I already had heads installed so I've never had to use air on my car. However, on other cars, an air compressor was used to hold the valves up.
