My alternative to custom tuning for gear swap in my '02
I didn't really have $450 to spend on EW custom tuning for my 3.73 gear swap. Luckily, I have some close friends who work in a Chevrolet dealership. I took my PCM and a VIN from a 2001 SS optioned exactly like my car (A4, 3.23 gears, no TC) down to them and they flashed this VIN into my computer. I drove the car for a week to be sure it was going to run OK while thinking it was a 2001 SS. Today, I installed the gears then used a HPP3 for a 2001 to calibrate for them. Car is running great, speedo is dead on, and my shift points have been reset successfully.
Most people I talked to said this would never work, but since it did, I just wanted to throw out another way to swap gears without being forced to go with custom tuning (though I realize there are many more benefits to custom tuning) or spending $170 for SLP's one-time gear calibration only.
I got the gears as a Christmas gift, and I only have $250 in the HPP3. I think I came out pretty well for a gear swap and programming on an '02
Going to the track this weekend.

That's a pretty darn neat solution. As long as everything works/runs right. Learn something new all the time. Congrats!

I thought it was a pretty cool idea too, when it was proposed to me. One of my friends at the dealership has a 99 TA that's had a 2001 program in it for over 6 months. Switching programs alone picked his car up over two tenths. I felt better knowing this guy had done this before. Like I said, a week and a half into having the 01 program and the car is running as well as ever.
The VIN I installed in my computer belongs to a 2001 SS that runs 12.70s with a lid, cat-back, and MAF ends. Pretty stout and it can't hurt to have a program out of a factory ringer
I hope to shave a couple of tenths from the gear swap. We'll see!

That's GREAT to hear! I've already gone w/ the custom tuning, but this is excellent for those w/ '02's! It's nice to see it work, both from a financial standpoint and "being right" standpoint . I bet we'll see a few others take this route as well.
I'd better make it to a sticky track soon, or you're going to surpass my time! Good luck at the track, and give me a ring when you make a pass. I'll be ragging out my dad's SS when I pick it up for him Saturday.

There are a couple of those on the market, but I've heard of people setting transmission slip codes with all of them. $119 is a good deal if yours doesn't.
Anyway, my shift points badly needed to be modified as well.

Thats cool that it worked out like that. I know of a few cars that came with top speed governors that do not have them now with the simple VIN number swap reprogramming

I have a 2002 SS and my best friend has a 2001 Trans Am with hypertech for it and everything, can the dealership imput his vin into my computer and we can both use his same hypertech? If so how much does the dealer charge, or if i'm completly off please take me out of this fantasy land.

User name "Ira" makes a plug'n play gear calibrator for like $99. I forget the URL to his website.
I was gonna get one because I think it even has a little switch.
This way I could switch from one 26 to 28" tires.

Matt (2002SS) I don't see why it wouldn't work, if you guys were sharing a VIN. Maybe Joseph can shed light on that.
I also think you probably need to know someone within the dealership to get a VIN flashed. I don't think it's a service they would perform on the record...

Ya we are cool with the people at the dealership and they kinda know if it will work out also, so were gonna see if we can share the hypertech and see how it goes. thanks for the idea tho.

No-go on sharing the Hypertech, even with the same VIN, without pulling the program out of one car and then programming the other.
