Should I be concerned about these filthy intake runners....pics inside
While swapping on my LS6 intake I was shocked to see how filthy my cylinder head intake runners were with what appears to be oil (see pic below). What is strange is that I am fortunate and do not have an LS1 "oil burner" since I get ~2500 miles/qt on oil and didn't think that my PCV was a problem either since the tailpipes burn very clean as evidenced by passing a tailpipe emissions test. I took a solvent soaked rag and cleaned all of this oil out before I bolted on the new manifold but am afraid it is only going to come back. Sould I be concerned with this?

thats what mine looked like with about 15000 miles on the car. I also found some loose debris (leaves and such). Enjoy the new intake, and dont sweat the oil =)

PCV valve is the culprit (or at least that side of the equation). Could be that it recently barfed or it could be build up over time. Either way, there are several "fixes" to keep it at a tolerable level and not affect performance.

Every car I have pulled the intake on had a large amount of oil in the intake runners and a large amount of junk (leaves, etc.) under the manifold as well. It is really nothing to worry too much about. Some are worse than others though.

HAHAH!!!
You think that's bad?!? Man, you should have seen mine when I pulled it off. It was fuggin gross. You're perfectly fine.
BTW, I took a car vacuum cleaner and sucked up all the leaves and stuff. Didn't want to try brushing them around and risk getting **** inside the cylinders.

I haven't had the intake off my LS1 yet, but lemme tell you - that is CLEAN compared to the intake ports on my Jeep (96k mi.) when I had the manifold off! I'd say no worries.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
Nightclaw, this motor only has ~11K miles on it! I really thought that it would look much cleaner.
This has now led me on a mission to find a better filter system for the PCV before entering the intake system. This just can't be good for intake valve longevity either.
