I agree. The injectors are switched on and off very rapidly, that is the noise you are hearing.

Ok here's one. I've always heard one type of ticking (injectors). Today it was about 30 degrees out, I go and start the car. Just let it sit there idling. I raise the hood and am looking around in there, nothing major. I decide to check the tranny fluid. All of a sudden I start hearing a new type of ticking from what sounds like the driver's side of the engine. Could I have bent a pushrod just sitting there Did I just happen to hear a rocker poop out the needle bearings? Or is it piston slap?

They are just plain noisy as hell. When it gets to full temp mine quiets down some. Part of it is the all aluminumn engine block but I had a Z71 with the ls1 based v8 with cast iron block and it was pretty loud too.(though not as loud)
When mine is cold it is quiet. About the time the air pump kicks off then I get the "ticking". It sounds like a lifter. If I rev it a little it goes away for a moment or two then comes back. When it is fully hot I hardly notice it.
U gonna have to live with it I think. Mine ia an 01 with 11k.

I haven't investigated it yet but someone told me there is a check valve in the fuel line that causes that. At least on the trucks anyway. Like I said I have not looked at it yet.

My old '98 T/A did it and so does my '99 SS and so far every other LS1 I have took the time to listen to does this also, I don't think it's the piston slap? it can only be heard when outside the car under the front fenderwell, it almost soumds like a pulley? it cannot be heard inside the car and it always does this, could it be the injectors?

I also have a ticking noise that come.z from the motor when it is cold and then it quiets down when it warms up... I was wondering if it was possible that it is an exhaust leak from the headers???? I have also thaught it could be a lifter or maybe a spring ..... if anyone finds out what it is please put it up ... I hope to try and take the valve covers off SOON and hopefully it wont be anything major if its in there

I have a pulley thats really loud. If I put a wrench on the bolt it goes away. It doesn't bother me though.

I had a 99 Silverado w/ the 5.3 and it was louder than my 98Z28. My wife's 2000 Tahoe (5.3) does it as well, and is about the same noise level as my Z. With the silverado, I talked to a tech at the dealer and was told it was the injectors 'tipping'. Unfortunatly I don't racall what that actually meant well enought to explain it here, but was told that PCM reprogram would take care of it. It was also noted that there was not a functionality or longevity issue with the noise. He was referencing an internal TSB

Hmmm, I have always thought it was valvetrain....
I guess the injectors make sense.......
My valvetrain did get louder when I did upgrade valvesprings, retainers, and pushrods...

If you still have the A.I.R. system on the car it's probably the the check valves or the pump itself making the noise, it usually goes away when it warms up.
Nothing to worry about.

I have the same noise as does every other LS1 ive heard...I thought it was a valvetrain problem at first but at higher rpm the noise didnt increase and it didnt seem like a pully..Must be the injectors..
