Default 6-qts, stock filter size...oil hitting crank?

I bought a book today showing the internals of theo il pan, ect. and I noticed the Vette is different than the F-body. The F-body pan gets VERY CLOSE to the crank. I have been using 6 qts instead of 5.5 with the regular filter on my oil changes. Am I hitting the crank, is this bad, whats up?

Patman said I had a lot of clearance btwn. the crank/oil level, just checking that your oil pan/crank/oil level test was done with a F-bod and not a Vette.

Sorry for the second guessing, I just want to make sure I did not misunderstand and that its 100% ok to run 6qts in my WS6 with a regular oil filter.

*just being paranoid*

On my dipstick it reads about 1/2 inch or so above the XXXX area with 6 qts.

Ive read that alot of people run 6 qts with the stock PF46 filter. Im probably going to run the PF61 w/ 6 qts next oil change, dont know If I'll use synthetic or not though.

On a stock AC-delco filter (for the 5.7), I used almost exactly 5 and a Half quarts. Thats after the car ran and was brought up to temp. I am planning on rechecking tonight just to be sure.

But on the next oil change I am changing to the longer 6.0L truck filter and will fill accordingly.

if your running the stock filter,i wouldn't go above 5 and a half quarts.too much oil in the pan and your increasing windage, and take a chance on aerating the oil....

A lot of autox or road racing guys with F-bodies regularly run 6-7 quarts to avoid oil starvation. I ran the long K&N filter for awhile, then became paranoid seeing it hang below the oilpan and switched back. Still run 6qts, though.

I ran 5.5 qts with my pf46 filter and 6.0 when i switched to the napa gold long filter.
That was the reason i switched to the long filter to get rid of that half qt.

6 quarts here too, but I use a longer oil filter which alone holds half a quart.

i dont think that anyone has really answered the question that you asked, so let me try. i do not know if your oil is hitting the crank or not, but i do know that it is not bad from a driveablitly aspect. from a drag racing aspect or horsepower... it is. oil and oil pressure steal hp. that is why alot of drag racers will drain a quart between runs... to keep the oil pressure down. but no it will not hurt anything

Windage, or oil splashing into the crank at high engine speeds, is the probem. If the oil level is that high, it can cause aeration or foaming that would lower the oil pressure (air is compressible, oil is not) and could eventually damage the internals if uncorrected. Lowering the oil level should not lower the pressure, unless the remaining oil volume got hot enough to change the measured pressure. Lowering the oil level should only prevent oil from being that high in the pan under higher rpms.

The real question is, how much oil is in the top-end when you are driving? I've heard the LS1 traps a lot of oil in the heads before it drains back, and that is one reason for oil consumption on cars with stock PCV that are not vented from the valley cover.

There was a thread on here a long time ago and I believe it was mitchntx who posted pics showing the stock f-body oil pan off the car and he filled it with 7 quarts of oil and it still had enough room that it wasn't going to hit the crank.

Should you run more oil if you have a pump that produces more pressure? I just rebuilt my engine and used a Melling oil pump which is giving me the following oil pressures:

Cold start
65psi @ idle
75-80psi @ speed

Running temp
55psi @ idle
65psi @ speed

ls1muscle, I had seen those previously but thank you for sharing with others. I guess the important thing is, there is no way oil in a running engine (1/2 qt lower than engine off) should be in the crank.
7 qts just goes into the rod dimple towards the front of the pan. I had to touch the water with my finger to break the surface tension to get it to flow in there...
If that is the case, then at static but running levels, oil should be lower than the crank and rods.

Quick Reply: 6-qts, stock filter size...oil hitting crank?
