Will running ope?n headers hurt the motor?

I installed the Hooker LT's and won't be getting the y pipe made till Tuesday. Will it hurt it to drive it with the headers open? Will I burn out an exhaust valve or anything?

So I take it installing the headers and then driving about 50 miles open header to have the y-pipe built isnt going to work?

This has nothing to do with O2 simms. Those are for the rear O2 sensors. In this case it is the front O2 sensors involved. (The rear O2 sensors have absolutely nothing to do with the fuel/air mixture anyway.)

I didn't say that. <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0"> According largely to your header design, you may suffer no O2 sensor problems from open headers. The farther away from the exit of the headers the front O2 sensors are, the less chance of having a problem. I might also think that the larger CI your engine is and the more overlap that your cam has, the better chance your engine will have of having these problems.
My guess? For a stock CI engine and LTs I would think that driving it 50 miles would be ok.

You may find that it runs like crap due to outside air making contact with the O2 sensors. This would cause an extremely rich condition as the O2s would be giving a false lean reading. Extension pipes (maybe 18") off of the headers would solve this but in that case you might as well wait on the Y-pipe.
You would risk incurring damage more from washed down cylinders, if the richness were extreme enough, than from burnt exhaust valves.

It is stock CI and would be with Hooker LT's. I think I'll give it a try, if I have to, I guess I could tow it. It would just be nice to save the $200 on the install. Thanks for the opinions.
